I just bought a PS3. Can you recommend me some games??

Yes, what of it?

After several years of things not going well, I just bought a PS3. I had purchased a few games here and there for cheap, but I was wondering what the people of FFO could recommend me. I like RPGs, (medieval themed ones) games with large amounts of character customization, and the occasional fighting game (think street fighter, and not Mortal Kombat too gory).

What collections are worth looking into?

Are you looking strictly for exclusives? What about multi-platform games from that gen, did you have a 360 and play stuff like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, or Skyrim? What about games that have been remastered for PS4 (ala the Uncharted series or The Last of Us)?

Without knowing the answers to any of this I'll throw some stuff out there as I have gotten into collecting PS3/Xbox 360 games the past few years and spent way too much time researching the library of these consoles:

Demon's Souls
Valkyria Chronicles
Uncharted 1 through 3
The Last of Us
Folklore
Star Ocean 4 (my understanding is the PS3 has the better version, but I could be wrong)

A couple other games worth looking at that may be fringe games:
White Knight Chronicles 1 & 2
Lair
Heavenly Sword

I love the HD collections on the PS3 - The Rachet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, and Splinter Cell collections are all solid in my opinion. There's a couple more (Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider), but I don't have those yet. If you like the weirdness of Disagea there's the Disgaea Triple Pack that I think comes with Disgaea 3, 4, and D2. I own it, but I haven't played it yet.

There's a couple Tales games on the PS3 if you like that series - Xilia, Xilia 2, Zestria (also on PS4), Tales of Graces F. There's also a Tales of Symphonia HD version for the PS3.

The Trails in the Sky series has two PS3 entries - Trails of Cold Steel and Trails of Cold Steel 2. They are sitting in my backlog, but I picked them up when I read that they were considered by some to be a spiritual successor to the Suikoden series. That alone was enough to convince me to buy the games.

There's also a ton of stuff on PSN from the PS1 and PS2 era. I think I own like 40 or 50 PSOne games and like 30 PS2 games through PSN sales. I don't think I paid more than $5 for anything. A lot of it I paid like $2 or less when it was on sale. I'm a sucker for digital copies of classic games for dirt cheap. Off the top of my head I know I have all the PS2 Shin Megami Tensei games, Suikoden 1 through 4, Wild Arms 1 and 2. Final Fantasy I, II, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, Chrono Trigger, Front Mission 3, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve. There's just a ton of classic stuff on the PSN store.

PSN sales on PS3 titles are becoming more and more sparse and I suspect they are going to shut the store down in 2019 or 2020, but there are still good deals to be had if you look for them. Even if you don't wait for the deals most of these titles are $10 bucks or less and make the PS3 an amazing retro Sony console.

I love the PS3. It may actually be my favorite console of all time. With all the stuff available through the PSN store and the library itself, it is a damn fine system.

There's a lot more exclusive stuff, but not that was jumped out at me reading your post initially.
