Should Square-Enix/Eidos revive the LEGACY OF KAIN franchise

During the early parts of the 32-Bit (5th Generation) era there was an RPG that stood out in the market, that was Crystal Dynamics/Eidos' Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain.

It stood out because it was a console RPG that had a lot of mature content, adult themes, dark setting, and a cynical nature especially in the storytelling. At the time RPG's were dominated by Japan so this new approach was seen as something unique and brought a lot attention from gamers and gaming publications.

Suffice to say, the first Legacy of Kain was ahead of its time. Since most gamers were still in their adolecent this style or RPG was somewhat under appreciated. Plus while good and fun  the game was far from great., due to the technical limitations of consoles at the time.

However with the growing and older demographic and the technical leaps and bound in console gaming the more Western-style RPG's, with a more darker and mature storytelling, has become viable in the console gaming market surpassing JRPG's. This is proven with the success of Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, and Fable and even Japanese Develoepr Form Software found success with the anti-JRPG JRPG Demon's Souls (selling 600,000 copies in the US ... almost 3x more than Japan).

Legacy of Kain seems to be a franchise that can find new life in today's generation of gaming. This, as mentioned earlier, is due to the older demographic and what current consoles are capable of doing.

With Square-Enix buying Eidos (who I believe own the publishing rights of Legacy of Kain) now seems the best time to do so. In the case Eidos, with the success of Deus-Ex Human Revolution and the return of Tomb Raider, Legacy of Kain could be another revivied IP they can add to their portfolio. For Square-Enix Legacy of Kain has enough brand recognition to make whatever game Eidos develops into a hit (provided no one screws it up).

A hit is what Squre-Enix needs right now, due to their current fiancial losses during the year and the lack of consumer confidence with their recent efforts in the FF franchise. Legacy of Kain will definatley another potential AAA Franchise Square-Enix can benefit from.

So I ask whose with me?

Vampires are in these days so I'm surprised they haven't done it already.

Well, I played Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, and that was fantastic.  Soul Reaver 2, however, was god-awful.

It could be awesome, though, so I'd say yes.  Hell yes, even.

This exactly. I'd be up for a revival, it could turn out pretty awesome if it's more like the 1st.  I love the atmosphere of that game.

"Please help me, kind sir."

Blood Omen was great and Soul Reaver was pretty good, as well. I'd rather see a game in the same vein as BO, though.

I haven't played any of the Legacy of Kain games. Been wanting to buy Blood Omen before but I dunno, never really got around to doing it.

^ I'm in the same boat. I got interested in seeing what it's about because of a dorm mate and Raz's username, but I never got any further than that.

Without Amy Hennig and the rest of the original team behind the Legacy of Kain lore and storyline, hell no. Though I thought Soul Reaver 2 was pretty decent at least. The only truly bad game in the series, IMO, was Blood Omen 2.

I think I may have been confusing SR2 with BO2. Oops.

likes 'em pretty

Tony Jay (voice of all scary motherfuckers everywhere including this series) died years ago. He played the cosmic entity manipulating Kain, Raziel, and all the major figures throughout the timeline. Kind of hard to continue the series without him.

Earl Boen does the msot spot on Tony Jay impression in existance. That asid, without Amy Hennig, I'm going to say no. I would LOVE more  Legacy of Kain, it's always been one of my favourite series. But without her at the helm for the plot and dialogue, as well as the loss of several other key LoK staffers... I'm going to pass on a revival. At least Amy Hennig is doing good things with Uncharted now.

I got into the series with Soul Reaver and completely fell in love with the story so unless it's the original staff reviving it then i don't want anything new. Rather just make up what i want to happen in my head.

Yes they should. I loved Soul Reaver. Everything about that game was cool. The setting, characters, environments, everything.

I wouldn't like to see a new cash cow; having said that, I'm certain that I'd be willing to invest in a complete graphical overhaul of Blood Omen, and the two main Soul Reaver games, similar to SHadow of the Colossus and ICO.

It's a gonna be OK

I'm up for HD remakes or ports of Legacy Of Kain games. Soul Reaver was a game I played to death back in my high school days.
