Would you participate in an FFS Minecraft server?

I am seriously willing to put $10-12 a month towards renting a server.  Single player just feels empty and you guys are awesome.

I want to get some sort of headcount.  Who would honestly be wanting to do this?

(i made a new thread because i couldn't pm a mod to make polls, also we can't make polls sry)

trust me, i'm a doctor

I would... once I actually buy Minecraft. That's probably still a month or so off though.

YEEEEEAAAH!

I'd be down for playing on a server with you guys but I doubt I'd be very involved. I've been playing on a server for a while and decided to stop after a bit because once I built a sky fortress with a skull that weeps lava, there seemed to be little else I could invest into it. I'm in if you start this up, but if you're paying $10-$12 a month I don't want you paying that for me to play around for 5 minutes every other month.

maybe. i'd have to buy Minecraft but that wouldn't be a big deal. Thing would be connecting to a US server from here. i dunno what it would be like in Minecraft.

Absolutely, and often.

From helping moderate another private server, I do recommend a few things:  completely whitelisted server to stop griefers, a second admin to restart a crashed server or add people to the whitelist if the primary admin isn't available, make enough diamonds available at the spawn point so people can start gathering resources and building things right off the bat, instead of spending ages hunting enough diamonds for good durable tools, and moderators willing to spawn a few things for people doing big projects.

For example, a public tree farm is an immensely useful thing to have very early, but it needs glass to make it work right.  A moderator willing to spawn enough glass to get it up and running early means everyone gets to have plenty of wood to start out with.  Without a cooperative moderator, mining for coal and sand will eat up a few real-time days, and meanwhile everyone will be chopping down the picturesque forest next door.  Same with a mob spawner; the best way to get TNT is to have a working high-capacity mob farm, which will need a shitload of smooth stone and glass to get running.

Also, the admin needs to check the server for viability before opening it up.  It makes for a very poor server if people spawn in the middle of a huge desert with no resources available.

No big thing.  You connect via IP address, and ping isn't a big factor in how SMP plays.  Honestly, server lag is going to be worse than your ping most of the time.

Well isn't starting from nothing part of the fun?  I can't imagine it would be anywhere near as fun if it was just loading up for the first time and being handed a hundred diamonds.

Oh, yeah, I agree.  If it's going to be survival-oriented I'll play, but I'm not really interested in elaborate building projects.

On the other hand, I don't see the fun in spending the bulk of my time mining and not enough on building cool things.  But this is a known divide in Minecraft SMP.  Some people like to build, some people like to explore, and never the twain shall meet.

So, I finally got ahold of (legal) minecraft. If there's still any plans in a FFS server, I'm down with that.
