CC, as others have said bet your trip prepared. I don't leave the UK without a well read Lonely Planet guide anymore.  I can tell you those books are very good.  I've ended up in some amazing places and situations thanks to those books.  But the absolute best advice I can give as was given to me is to throw yourself into the place and culture as much as you can.  That means see, do and try as much as you can, as I promise you'll only regret not trying something when you look back at your trip.

As to what happened to Mav, I got to say I've been to a wide range of places in the world and the most shit I got was trying to get back into the port of LA.  The guy went nuts at me becuase of a small bit of water damage on a page in my passport.  He wanted to know why I had stamps showing entry into Morocco in my passport, as if it was some kind of big deal.  He didn't calm down until I should him proof I was in the British Armed Forces, even then he was cagey with me.  Heh,  my wife furious with the guy as if that made a difference.  Guess the guy had had a really bad day and decided to be an asshole to someone.

Why do I have stamps showing entry into Morocco?

Because I went into Morocco?

Yeah I had more trouble getting back into the States than I ever did leaving it.

Hope its not too obvious

- When exchanging money to destination currency,  dont exchange too little, better be pessimist. But also dont exchange too much money, since cotations are always good for banks , not for the citizens.
- Check out what you wanna see and where you wanna go in advance. Will save money, time, and avoid strees and regretfulness.
- Try new food. Come on, you will have the rest of the year to keep your usual diet.
- Bringing some medicine is nice. It would be a pity to not fully enjoy your trip because of a headache or something similar.
- I dont know about other countries, but since we brazilians pay tons of taxes  on imported products, we always go on a consumist berseker impulse at duty free stores. "OMFG, whisky here is so cheap!!!"
- Dont take too much clothes. You need space for the gifts you WILL buy. On the worst scenario, you can always buy new ones or do laundry.
- A visit to supermarket might be interesting, why the prejudice against it? At least for the ones who like culinary. You will surely see exotic items
