I do believe a superstar's life is an extremely lonely one. You got tons of superficial friendships, people who gravitate around you hoping to get their 15 min of fame, paparazzi following you everywhere, pressure to be on your top game constantly... etc. Frankly, I don't envy them one single bit.
In her case, the domestic violence surely didn't help as well.

I'd imagine it's pretty hellish in some respects. Yes, you make a shitload of money, but if you ever become as famous and successful as Whitney Houston your time ceases to be your own. Your days become incredibly regimented, you're at the mercy of dieticians, publicists, personal trainers, vocal coaches... it gets very intense. You lose your privacy almost completely. If you're a strong person (like say Beyoncé) you can assert yourself over the top of it and have the confidence to ride the wave. If you're not... you sink. Drugs are horrible and addictive and harmful but they're also a great way to stop feeling like shit.
