So...the PS Vita

Big Tall
Taller Than Tall

I had no intention of getting one. I really didn't. Between my 360 and PC, I have more than enough outlets to keep me busy and quench my gaming thirst. I've also never had a handheld. Oh, I've played with pretty much all of them over the years, but never owned one. And then the Vita hit. Well, and through a number of random circumstances I won the First Edition Bundle that was sent to my Gamestop store.

Today is launch day for the Vita. I've had mine for 4-5 days and it's consumed most free hours I've had. The bundle came with Little Deviants and I picked up Uncharted (which is a series I've also never played as I don't have a PS3). Between those and the welcome pack I've essentially just been screwing around with the Vita. Honestly, I think I've spent more time in the menus and settings than anything else.

A quick rundown of what I've noticed so far:

Pros:
- Let's get this out of the way first: The 5" screen is absolutely gorgeous. It has a fantastic resolution. I can't say this enough.
- On that note, the screen responsiveness is top notch. I haven't had any issues with the touch screen.
- While a massive handheld, the layout on the front works for the most part. My only gripe is the Start and Select buttons were put in the bottom right corner which makes them a bit awkward to find by times, but there really wasn't anywhere else to put them either.
- The camera (I'll get to that below)
- PS button + Start = Screenshot. Easy and awesome.
- The game lineup is probably one of the strongest launches I've seen. There's something for everyone there, though Uncharted is about the only one I'd say is a must-buy.

Cons:
- Games are/seem pricey. Maybe it's just having not owned a handheld or really paid too much attention to the prices, but most games in Canada are $39.99. One of those is Lumines. Really Sony?
- The touch screen on the back feel awkward. Maybe I'm just not holding the Vita the right way. I played around with Little Deviants to see how it works and it'll take some getting used to. Apparently with FIFA, it's much improved as the back touchscreen is used to aim your shot and such.
- Memory cards are Vita-specific and, as a result, overpriced. My bundle came with a 4GB card, but with the AR Play games at launch today (three of them), grabbing FFT from the PSN store, and so on...I'll be looking to upgrade sooner than later.
- Love the browser, but there's no Flash update to allow viewing Youtube vids, or doing anything with Flash apps in general. When scrolling, the browser waits for you to stop before it refreshes that section of the page. It's a little thing, but really annoying.

Now then, the camera. Obviously some of the games have that "Look how we've integrated the new features!" aspect, which really comes down to shoe-horning unnecessary things in a game. The camera, from what I can tell so far, is not one of them. I love the fact that in Uncharted, part of the collectibles is to take pictures. It has the reference pic, you have to find where it is while playing (there's a cue that comes up to let you know when if you're close), and you snap the pic and get a bit more background. Love it. With the Welcome Pack of games, you take a pic and then it gets turned into a jigsaw puzzle. There's a camera on the front and back. There's no flash, but it works well. I'm surprised how much it impresses me. Weird.

Overall, I'm really happy with the Vita. Would I have bought one on my own? Probably not, but that has more to do with not really needed/wanting a handheld. Now that I have one, I'll certainly be picking up more games from the store, especially with PSP/PSOne games available.

I've been there, hombre.

I heard something about Vita users in Japan being able to download their previously-bought PSP games onto their Vitas for a small charge. Is this coming over here as well? I had my PSP stolen a year ago, and if that wasnt' bad enough, my copy of War of the Lions was in there. I've still got the box as well as a few other PSP games, so for me, it would be a huge plus if I could get these games on the Vita without having to pay full price for them all again.

I grabbed War of the Lions for $9.99. There's a LOT of PSP/PSOne games available for purchase and download and pretty much all at a reasonable price from what I've seen.

A couple other things I forgot:
- NETFLIX. Granted, it's not working for me right now. When it does, however...
- I have the WiFi Vita. The 3G isn't launching in Canada for a bit yet. I'm at work with no WiFi, which sucks (welcome to small town Canadia), but for the most part I can find a hotspot to connect up if need be.
- Near. This is a neat little app that tracks where you are, what you're playing, and what people in your general area are doing. It's telling me I'm located about 150kms from where I actually am right now (I can't remember the service used to determine location), but I can see it being useful. You can check out what people in your area are playing, how they've rated games, all sorts of things. Or you can just block your location info and say the hell with it.

Sorry, misread that. As amaron said, pretty sure it's not.

I'm somewhat interested. My PSP got love, but not until I hacked it. I do however have several games - Valkyrie Profile, War of the Lions, etc. I'd want to be able to port over from UMD, and I'm not paying full MSRP to do so again.

I'm reallying enjoying the 3DS with the circle pad attachment to give it dual thumbsticks, I'm sure Vita would feel the same.

That said, I look at the games for it, and I have to ask myself - why the heck wouldn't I just play it on a console? The 3DS at least has the dual screen, touch, 3D gimmicks. I know Vita has the touch thing, but I'm sure it's not fully fleshed out yet. Do I really want to spend the money on the Vita and the games just to play Uncharted and MvC3 on it?

I'm waiting for an inevitable hardware revision. The buttons feel small, the D-Pad feels awful, and trying to use the face buttons and the right analog stick at the same time feels extremely awkward. It's also mad expensive, combined with their idea of PSP backwards compatibility being a complete slap in the face of those who dared to buy UMD's. I really can't justify spending that much money for a handheld. Hell, I don't even have (or really want) a 3DS yet.

It's a beautiful screen. But it needs to be a little smaller or the unit a little bigger so the right analog stick can be not directly underneath the face buttons.

The buttons do feel a little small, but I haven't had much of an issue despite my giant hands. The D-Pad...yeah it's not great. Still better than the 360 D-Pad though that's not saying much.

Im waiting for the price drop cause Sony will have to do the same thing as Nintendo for the 3ds.

Whats really sad for sony is looking at sale's numbers in japan.

Last week.
3DS â?? 94,667
PS3 â?? 21,993
PSP â?? 14,824
Vita â?? 12,309
Wii â?? 7,874
PS2 â?? 1,433
Xbox 360 â?? 983
DSi LL â?? 901
DSi â?? 656

The week before

3DS â?? 67,558
PS3 â?? 22,002
PSP â?? 15,860
Vita â?? 13,939
Wii â?? 8,206
PS2 â?? 1,239
Xbox 360 â?? 1,139
DSi LL â?? 957
DSi â?? 651

Even the 3ds never had numbers this low... Sony will have to drop prices soon. But sadly for them not only will they have to drop console prices they will probably have to mark down software and memory card prices. No one is going to pay $50 for a portable game.

Buggle Up! Danger! Danger! (Genocide!) Death the Crisis! Dangerous Zombie!

If it proves to be the RPG machine that the PSP was, I'll definitely get one - after a hardware revision as well.

Im sure it will, but its still really low right now.

It will cause a price drop just like the 3DS.

Let's Player

Like some others have said, I'm gonna wait for a price drop.
I really like the look of the hardware...but there isn't a game that I would buy at launch. Wipeout is the closest, but I'm not gonna buy the Vita just for that. Maybe once Persona 4 is released for it, then I will buy one (along with one or 2 exclusive games).

There's just nothing making me want one right now, which is quite sad :(

My most recent 3 let's plays:

Zelda: Oracle of Seasons - Link (Din, Onox, Maku...I'm so funny)
Killer7 (Completed) - Link
Luigi's Mansion (Completed!) - Link

Cult of Personality
Insert witty remark here.

I'll admit, I would buy the Vita if it weren't for two big drawbacks for me.  One is the price, which as others have mentioned will probably go down.  The other is the price for the games.  I'm sorry, but there's just no way in hell I can talk myself into spending $50 for a handheld game, no matter how pretty/awesome it may be.
