PS2 Disc Read Problem

My PS2 has developed a bad habit of not being able to read discs.  I never get a DRE message, but sometimes (more often than not, these days) it will be unable to read a disc.  Sometimes a reset is all that is required.

However, I have noticed that if I let the PS2 sit on the "home" screen, after approximately 2-3 minutes, the drive? will make a little noise and the disc will start spinning (it sounds like it's spinning faster) and the game will load just fine.  This seems to work every time.  I tried changing the disc speed to Fast, but it doesn't change anything.  It happens with both PS1 & PS2 discs.

I haven't tried standing the unit vertical, yet, so maybe that will help.

Crono
Crono can cross dimensions too!

Have you tried cleaning the lense?  It's a 10 minute fix if that helps but it could be something else.  I've had similar issues with my first gen PS2 twice and both times a cleaning fixed it.

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

I have ran a DVD lens cleaning disc a few times, but as far as opening it up and cleaning the lens, which is what I think you're asking, I have not.  The lens cleaning disc seemed to help the first time I used it, months ago, but didn't do anything yesterday.  It's just strange that it always reads the disc after sitting for a few minutes.
