Baldur's Gate and sequel getting enhanced editions

I'm not crazy about BGII (although updating it might make it palatable), but given the fans around here, there's bound to be some sort of reaction.  Also, trying out the poll option.

When it comes to the graphics and interface, they really have nowhere to go but up. Time has not been very kind to either and it's very offputting to someone who didn't play it back in the day.

So if there's an option for no isometric view and characters that don't look like ants, I'm all for it.  I also wonder if they're changing the gameplay rules any, though I'm guessing "no" on that. Shame. I hated AD&D 2E. :P

I think the backgrounds from Baldur's Gate II hold up quite well, as do some of the monster models (dragons, mainly). The rest, though, not so much. The interface could definitely stand to be upgraded with modern conventions, such as trapfinding, easy switching of weapons/shields/dual-wielding, etc.

The first Baldur's Gate needs faster level progression and a higher level cap (readjust some of the monsters and enemies to account for that if they must). Low-level D&D for a full 60 hour computer game SUCKS. Maybe some faster walking speeds of the characters as a whole to pick up the pacing, which is also a huge problem for the first BG, in particular.

On somewhat of a side note, I hope 5e captures the pacing and feel of 2e, except without the ass-backwards rules like Thac0 and  lower=better AC.

I hated the low level gameplay in BG1, but BG2 was a great game all around.  This is good news.

I wouldn't expect too much from this project. They're basically modders with access to the source code, they're not going to be remaking it. It's still going to be isometric and they've already announced they're still using the 2nd Edition rules. Graphically I doubt they'll be changing the hand painted backgrounds (which I personally think still look gorgeous, and hold up great today).

It all just seems a bit pointless, to be honest. The game already runs on modern hardware, upscales to HD resolutions, and has such an active modding community. If it's compatible with current mods, it might be a nice excuse to repurchase the game, but if it changes enough that its not I doubt I'll ever bother.

Nooo they must not change anything on it! It must be kept the same so it will cater only to hardcore fans! The only thing they need to change is make it more shiny to justify the "Enhanced Edition" title.
