Give Life Back To Music

I'm really enjoying Reflektor and find it more enjoyable to listen to than The Suburbs, but I'm still coming to terms with the fact that they are no longer the same band that made Funeral. I think that old charm and sense of beauty is gone for good. They seem so jaded and political now. I want to compare them with Vampire Weekend because they handled similar themes on their latest. I feel like VW is building on their original sound, becoming something truly amazing, while AF is just changing into something completely different. I know bands have to progress and not stagnate or we get another Coldplay or Mumford, but it makes me sad when a group essentially abandons their roots. That said, Reflektor is still growing on me day by day, I guess I just miss the old Arcade Fire.

On the one hand, I kinda agree, since Reflektor feel like the first Arcade Fire album that doens't have this soaring anthemic song that builds to a crescendo that makes me lose it (Funeral had Neighborhood #1, Neon Bible had Wake Up, and The Suburbs had Sprawl II, although the more I think about it the more that last one feels like the evolutionary link between Reflektor and the other albums, but I digress). On the other hand, it's still immensely enjoyable and this probably has the highest concentration of songs I've enjoyed on any one Arcade Fire album since Neon Bible. Reflektor and Here Comes The Night Time in particular are just hopelessly infectious :D

Wake Up was also from Funeral, and Neon Bible had Keep The Car Running, but yeah, there doesn't seem to be a big anthem here. Here Comes The Night Time is pretty amazing and I consider it this album's Sprawl II, the immediately infectious danceable single. I'm really liking all the different rhythms they employed this time around, which I guess is the Haitian-influenced found they were going for. Awful Sound is pretty great too, and maybe the closest to that big buildup they've employed before. I also really like It's Never Over. So yeah, it's a great album, just a newer sound and I don't think they'll go back to the old one.

HALE YEAH

I would say Neon Bible was easily the more jaded and political album of the last three. Seriously, it's more than 50% political jaded indulgence. It still sounds great, but boy, The Suburbs was an alleviation.

All of Reflektor is incredibly listen-able, but I've come to expect that from Arcade Fire already. To me, the Eurydice/Orpheus duo of songs is the major highlight of the album. I have pretty much only listened to the album from beginning to end, except when I'm on break at work and can only listen to a few songs. The pre-gap secret song is fun to listen to sometimes. But you need to extract the data and edit it to play backwards with Audacity unless you can find a file online that's already edited.

I'm starting to get tired of the title track though, since I listened to it so much before the album came out, but that's my own fault. :)

On Neon Bible: Whenever I think of the album, the first thing that comes to mind is how preachy the album is. Whenever I listen to the album, the first thing that comes to mind is how great the songs are.

I dunno, XMU played the hell out of Reflektor (the song) and yet its terrible power over me remains undiminished
