The payment issue got much worse late last year - they finally retired the PlayOnline payment method and went with third party companies. Unfortunately these companies didn't have a good reputation, and players essentially rioted over the removal of a "trusted" service. Square-Enix introduced new additional payment options in January, so now you can pay by Paypal and other methods.

Still going strong here, although I only login twice a month or so.

I'm sorry to say my memories of FFXI aren't great.  I grabbed the demo disc a couple years after the game came out because I was thinking of finally getting it.  At that point I'd gotten over my anti-MMO bias and had been playing WoW for a while.  Even back then FFXI felt archaic in comparison.  The graphics were pretty rough, the gameplay was slow, and most of all, the interface was horrendous.  It took me over an hour to set up the damn demo and then I only played it for twenty minutes.

Once in a while I feel like maybe giving it another chance, but I never act on it.

For PC gamers, the interface was pretty damn bad and without a controller, the controls were even worse. At least it plays well with a PS2 controller, but even now I'm amazed at how shoddy a PC port it was.

Maybe it changed now, but really things like "no hotbar" and needing to macro EVERYTHING were pretty damn inexcusable.

No answer, must be that deaf bitch.

Greatest game experience I ever had..... until WoTG.

Abyssea may have breathed life back into a dying game, but it killed it for me. It took the purpose out of the game for me because it was now only about getting to max level as fast as possible to kill the same shit over and over again.

I wish I could go back and enjoy the game as it was when I'd sit in Jeuno for hours on end AFK for no good reason.

I really hope they let us make private servers when they finally shitcan it for good.

Yikes and away!

I would probably jump on the chance to play it again if there was a private server option, so I hope they will too.

Ten bucks on no, though.

I'm surprised no one's jumped on getting private servers for XI running, it seems just popular enough.

There have been a handful (pXi comes to mind) but they've been summarily shut down by SEX or development has been stopped.

I remember FFXI fondly. Having tried to play ages times since WoTG and Abyssea, it doesn't resemble what I loved.

I have two diffrent memories with FFXI

I remember months with Lonven barly "playing" the game, but doing tons of RP.

Then I came back recently and almost level capped with Mortaich, but then TOR hit.

Too bad I can't go.  At least they might release the CD/DVD here now.
