So I've been experiencing very high latencies recently, sometimes for hours, usually around 500ms but as high as about 700ms. I'm on a shared, wireless connection at home and I don't know what's causing it. Now before anyone says anything I asked Google but it was surprisingly vague and gave me about 5-6 different answers.
So I thought I'd ask you people, since I know some of you know what you're talking about and the others can at least be trusted to be entertaining. :)

silently judging all of you
Could be someone else on the network is coming close to maxing the available bandwidth. Could be radio interference. Could be your ISP, or a bad router.
Plug in with a network cable, see if it goes away. That'll tell you if it's radio interference. Try shutting off every other computer in the house, see if it's someone being a network hog (the loudest complainer will be your culprit). Unplug the router and plug straight into the modem, see if it's a bad router. If it still persists in the face of all this, call your ISP and start bitching.

I would add to the mix downloading and using inSSIDer if you can manage it. The tool is generally visual enough to understand even if you don't quite get what it all means. It's great for deciphering what to do about intereference in areas.
