What's your monitor resolution?

The best GPU value in the high end (as in max out every game) right now is the Radeon 7950, overclocked to hell and back.  While overclocking a Radeon 7970 or GTX 680 will get you more, they cost way too much.

If the 7950 is even too expensive, then simply go down the AMD list: 7870, and 7850 2GB.  Don't get the 7850 1GB unless you game at 1600x900 or lower, 'cause you're gonna want that VRAM in some games now and especially moving forward to future titles.

Nvidia isn't really competetive at their price points right now.  The only exception is the GTX 650 Ti (make sure it has "Ti" in it) which exists for those that can't quite reach the 7850 1GB wth their budget (7850 is superior, the the 650 Ti handily beats AMD's next lowest, the 7770).

AMD cards are a bit better at overlocking, but if you don't plan on OCIng then Nvidia options are suddenly quite good.  The GTX 660 matches with the Radeon 7870 and the GTX 660 Ti sort of  hangs with the 7950.  But the 660 series are not known for OC potential, so the 7870/7950 are noticably better when you OC both to max.

IMO, plan your build around a 7850 2GB and, after settling on the other parts, consider going higher only if your budget allows it.  I really don't recommend a 1GB card unless you game at super low res ( eg. if you have a 720p TV that you prefer to game on, then 1GB enough for 1366x768 gaming).

I usually suggest getting a PSU with at least 500 total watts and at least 36 amps total on the 12v rails.  Though if you're gonna get the 7950 or 7870 they are a bit greedy and I'd make sure it has at least 550 watts and at least 46 amps on the 12v rails.  You could run a 7950 on even less than 36 amps, but I like to have plenty of headroom for OCing and any unforeseen needs.

monitor resolution is currently 1440x900. Also have a TV screen that can double as a monitor, but at much lower resolution.

7950 is definitely too expensive for a GPU, about $100-$150 too expensive, IMO, but the GTX 650 Ti is much more within range. I have no idea how to OC, so mayhap I should simply go for the GTX, especially if you think it has a little longevity to it.

I understood some of those words that you typed.

Alrighty, if you can't budge for the 7850 2GB or even 1GB, then the 650 Ti performs fine for its price, but I suggest budging.  Although at 1440x900 1GB is absolutely fine for current titles, there's nothing wrong with future proofing it.  Even the 1GB version of the 7850 is around 23-30% faster than the GTX 650 Ti when both are at stock settings.  Since you are upgrading your computer for the first time in 7 years you obviously want to get longevity from this build, so it may be worth it to get the 2GB 7850 for the extra performance now plus the extra memory for later games.  My two cents.

As far as Power Supplies (PSU), they usually only advertise the total watts.  Say, look at this:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817148027&;name=Power-Supplies

500W.  But what really matters is the 12v rail(s).  Click the "Details" tab, and look for "Output"

+3.3V@17A, +5V@25A, +12V1@16A, +12V2@18A, -5V@0.5A, -12V@0.8A, +5VSB@3.0A

This has two 12V rails (typical) and they are 16A + 18A = 34A.  34 Amps is way more than enough for the GTX 650 Ti as it is a very low power card.  It's also enough for the 7850, especially since you have no intentions of overclocking.

Here's an example of a cheapo PSU.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817339019&;name=Power-Supplies

485W, and way cheaper.  But look at the 12v output:

+3.3V@16A, +5V@25A, +12V@15A, -12V@0.8A, +5VSB@2.0A

Only one 12v rail, which by itself can be fine, but only 15 amps!  That PSU is not made for graphics cards.  Stay far, far away.

Find a site that ships to you and look in the details.  500W total, and combined 12v rail amps in the 30s is all you need.  Just check out reviews and get something reliable and with enough output and you'll be fine.

Okay, so my build has finally happened, with thanks to a friend who seems to know quite a lot about computers, in that he's made a lot of them.

In the end we went with the HD 2GB 7850. I was having issues getting it running, in that it wasn't recognising which monitor was the primary monitor, but I got them both running off the GPU right now.

Instead of the i5 2500k, I got the i5 3570k, the next gen, about the same price, no real additions.

MoBo was P8Z77-V LX, though I probably could have gotten a much better MoBo for the same price.

Two sticks of 8GB RAM, IIRC.

PSU is 600w, IIRC.

This thing runs like a dream.

Very nice!  3570k + 7850 should run most games maxed out on "Ultra" or w/e is highest, and at 1440x900 you should be able to get away with 4xAA or higher in many titles.  Just don't try "Uber" on Witcher 2 because not even the 7970 can handle that!

Just make sure you have the newest AMD Radeon drivers if you happened to install older ones.  AMD recently released their 12.11 "Never Settle" Drivers which increased performance for all 7000 series cards.

In order to get everything working, I had to update properly, so drivers should be up to date. I'm looking forward to giving this guy a real go, though I think perhaps putting it somewhere out of the sun's glare might be a good idea if I don't want it to fry. Summer's a comin'.
