Camera recommendations

I want to go back.

Hey all.

I've been thinking of picking up a digital camera and learning some photography. I design game levels for a living and whenever I notice a cool building or scene I want to get a snapshot of it to use as reference later on. Also, photography just seems like a cool and fun skill to learn.

The thing is, I don't know shit about cameras. I would like to get a *nice* camera - not something absolutely top of the line that would be used by a professional photographer and costs a thousand dollars or whatever, but still something that can produce a crisp, sexy image. As I understand, a lot of this is in the technique, which I'm eager to learn, but I don't want to accidentally buy a camera that just sucks.

So for any photography enthusiasts, what should I be looking at? What's an appropriate price range? Is there anything I should seek out specifically, or actively avoid?

A lot of my film school comrades swear by their Canon 5 and 7Ds.  I know that the T2I is a more value-priced fac-simile, though.

Still here...

SLRs are great and all but certainly not necessary for a beginner. What is your budget? Assuming you are only getting a point and shoot camera for a few hundred there isn't a hell of a lot of difference between the different models. Just go for one of the big names. If you find one for a good price read reviews for it.

Many point and shoot cameras might do exactly what you want. I liek my little Canon point and shoot. It has just enlugh adjustment to be versatile and is small enough to take anywhere. So are you shooting $200 or $500 and how much bulk do you want to carry around?

Yeah, skip the SLR and pick up a nice point-'n-shoot.  You don't need an SLR until the P&S is limiting your skills, and you don't need a pro SLR (like the 5D or 7D) unless you're making money with your photography.

The old Canon SX120 was a decent little P&S camera that I used for a couple of years taking newspaper photos, until I slipped on an icy patch one cold winter night and smashed the lens (glad I wasn't carrying my 20D that night).  The SX150 is the most recent update of that line.  Decent lens, decent image quality, good zoom, can use CHDK to enable all kinds of neat features (!), I'd recommend it.
