Since I have one of those computers where the C:drive has a 36GB capacity and the D:drive around the 800GB, I decided to reset my computer back to factory settings and clean up the C:drive.
So here is my simple question concerning a difficult problem:
What's the best way to preserve space on the C:drive and get the D:drive to share the load? What programs can't leave the C:drive and how do I avoid programs making pathways to the C:drive?

The only thing that "needs" to be on the C:\ drive, if your using it for your Operating System, is your operating system and any hardware drivers that you need (and come to think of it I'm not sure that's even a must). You can put everything else that you want on other drives.
When installing programs always select the "Custom" or "Advanced" option, not only does this let you make sure the program isn't default installing some dumb toolbar, but it also lets you set the install path. Create a folder on your D drive, something like D:\Program Files, and just install all your programs to there.

Why don't you reformat and install the OS to the D drive?
Also, Windows 7+ recommends around 50GB of space, so you're going to be stuck long term.

Hmmm, this is the first time I've heard of the option of installing the OS to the D:drive. How do you do that?
So far I've followed THoG's advise and that seems to work very well. But maybe sometime in the future installing the OS directly on another drive could be very helpfull.

Not overly hard for WIndows 7 - but tricky for Windows Vista.
If you consider yourself a PC novice it might be best to get someone else to do it.
Personally I do it about once a year to get rid of crap.

Thanks, this looks very promising! Just like you I tend to clean my computer every year or so and this could make things a lot easier.
