Where did they get FFXIV assets?

I thought of something strange. First, is how does SE make a ground up MMO in such a short time. Seccond, did they use assets from another game (versus or something) that was already in development?

Can anyone fill me in on the details of FFXIV?

I know a little about the world before the beta launched. Is 2.0 a part of the story i.e. WoW's cataclysm that just changes the entire UI and gameplay? Or are they pretending XIV didn't happen at all and creating an entire new game? What is staying what is changing? How will this be explained in the game's story? Or will it?

A short time? FF14 was in development for five years or so. FF14 2.0 has been in development for roughly a year, that short period can be attributed to having many assets completed, the network infrastructure in place, and more importantly because SE's reputation is on the line they threw hundreds of developers at it (officially at 300+ developers) to get it right this time around.

I read that there's a storyline reason for the changes.  The game's antagonists pull the moon out of orbit, and it rains destruction across the game's landscape.  Your character, and others, are sent into the future as a means of escape.

LOL that storyline looks ripped right out what happened between War of Genesis 3 part I and part II. Similar game naming as well. (characters sent to future)

With a hint of WoW: Cataclysm.

An interesting note is that you can see the moon approach closer and closer as patches occur closing in on the 2.0 launch.

Also it should go without saying that SE chickened out and simply reused a number of character models from FFXI in XIV (ala, gobbues, goblins, qiqirn etc), but that's not the first time they've done that (FFXII reused FFXI's mandragora models after all), presumedly to cut down on development times and costs.

Not that it's a bad thing of course, but still comes across as more laziness than anything.

I believe they intended on making the Mandragora model from FFXI a staple figure like Tonberry etc.

But the FF13 model kinda throws a wrench in that theory

Wait, mandragoras were in FFXIII? I just checked the FFXIII guidebook bestiary and couldn't find it (there's an enemy called a flandragora though, but it's not the same).

To be fair I love the look of FFXI goblins so I was happy to see them back.

Nah they recycled the designs but not the models; FFXIV models were redone with higher polycount and details.

Nice UI, but still need a keyboard to type...
