PS3 problems on start up

Hi all,

The flatmate picked up a PS3 from his brother today for next to nothing because it has start up issues. You push the on button and it starts, stays on for about 2 seconds, we get a yellow light, beeps and puts itself back to stand-by again. We have got it to come on since but it does still get a bit funny like this. Any ideass of what it is and how to fix it?

Uh oh, sounds to me like the bad old YLOD bug ('Yellow Light of Death') - the rarer PS3 cousin to the 360's notorious Red Ring. From what I've read on Wikipedia, it just means a non-specific hardware failure that basically bricks the console.

All you can do is send it into Sony to repair. If it's out of warranty they'll repair it, but for a fee (and naturally, although the standard warranty for a PS3 is only a year, the YLOD tends to occur after 2-3 years, bringing to mind the old 'Sony Timer' story). Unfortunately, there's not much else that can be done I'm sorry to say Megz.
