1UP: You say you're a jack-of-all-trades, but what trade did you practice with Final Fantasy?

HI: I dealt mostly with the battle system.

1UP: So did you create the battle system, or work on balancing it...?

HI: I actually created the battle system, yes.

1UP: What was your inspiration for that?

HI: Basically, there's no one inspiration that I got that battle system from. It was just a logical process, where I thought, "How can I create an efficient battle system for a role-playing game?" That's the answer that I came to. At the root of it all, though, there's a basic kind of system that comes from professional sports...

1UP: Any particular sport that you had in mind?

HI: Yeah, the NFL. Football is probably the closest thing.

1UP: I guess I can see that, with the parties lining up on either side and taking turns...

HI: Yeah. A lot of it has to do with how in the NFL, the plays are pre-planned. Each side has a strategy. That's kind of the idea.

That's pretty amazing. I never thought about it that way, but it makes perfect sense...and I can see why I like both the NFL and these FF turne based battle systems .

I have often thought that American Football is probably the closest to a strategy RPG battle system as could exist in real life.

Ha.  I often joke and American Football and Baseball are turn based strategy and hockey, soccer, and basketball are RTS  This comparison works too.

I think baseball's better analogy would be something like FF12, where you can only control one party member and interact with one  "enemy" at a time. In Football, you've got twenty different battles going on, between each offensive lineman,  between WR and quarterback, tight end and someone else, QB and pass rushers, etc. so it makes sense to think of a full out strategy game. If you played baseball as a strategy game and the pitcher was realy good you could end up only controlling the batter for hours at a time. There is certaintly a ton of strategy in baseball but not really similar to strategy RPGs imo

I just want to clarify a point though - Ito didn't actually design the battle system for the original FF, not the two following Famicom titles - he essentially improved it though by creating the ATB system which was first used in FFIV.

So really, that article is slightly misleading saying 'he was the original designer of "Final Fantasy's' battle system (okay, to be pendantic the majority of the games from IV to IX used it, but it's still not truely correct - the article basically puts words in his mouth which Ito then corrects to his credit.)

Quite ironic then there's a thread about truth and ethics in game journalism here in General Gaming. ;)

Apparently we weren't the only ones linking Baseball to Tabletop RPGs.

I always knew Fielder was a Frost Giant!
