I want to go to Europe this summer

Probably for a couple of weeks.  Random places for a few days each.  I don't have to do everything everywhere, because I know I'll be back.

I've already figured out that I can fly much cheaper out of NYC than I can elsewhere...  Anyone have any advice or ideas on places to crash?  Anyone willing to lend me a couch to sleep on if you're there?  I'll bring something awesome from the US, I promise.

Also, any advice or thoughts on how to do it cheaply would be lovely.

Popular culture tells me that hostels can be pretty cheap.

Also, holy shit am I jelly.

Depending on where you go in Europe your trip can either be super expensive or super cheap. England, Scandinavia, Denmark, Germany and France are more on the expensive side, while southern or eastern europe is much cheaper. A good index is beer price. In Prague you can get half a pint for like 1â?¬ while the same thing will cost 4â?¬ to 6â?¬ in Paris. So really, it depends on what kind of budget you have.

Couchsurfing is always a good option, it's safe (well as safe as anything really) and that way you'll meet people that'll know about the cities you want to visit.

I'd prefer to couch surf over hostels just because I think it'd be awesome to actually put names with faces, plus actually staying with people that are from there rather than another group of random tourists that I'll never have contact with again.  It's an option if I need to but it'd be nicer to stay with people I know.

I've been around a lot of Europe but I'm not exactly an expert as it's been mostly pre-arranged package holidays so all the difficulty is taken from booking and arranging the trip. I know people who've used rail tickets which allow unlimited travel through several different countries, although I don't know about limitations, cost or which countries they work in, but it's certainly something to do a bit of research into.

Are you looking for touristy, sight-seeing places like Paris and London, or places a little more unusual? As somebody who hates the cold, I'd stick to more southernly places; I adore Greece and I'd definitely recommend Turkey, very different from the rest of Europe if you're heading East. My favourite place in the world is Ibiza, not just for the party scene but also because other parts of the island are stunningly picturesque - a night out in Ibiza Town is a great experience.

1. Avoid staying the entirety of your trip in capital cities, unless you're really into cities. Too expensive and some are too touristy. Explore!
That being said if you're in Scotland, I do recommend Edinburgh. It's a beautiful city, I've been twice and I'm planning on going back this year.

2. Italy's actually pretty cheap, but the culture is very sexist. I'm told American women are often repulsed by it. A work colleague went last year on her own and while she felt safe, she got very pissed off at the wolf whistles/staring etc.

3. France is nice, but the arrogance cliché is true.

4. Ireland's beautiful (I'm biased, but it is), but expensive. Don't visit for the weather.

Yeah, fair point. Last time I was in France we came in from an airport about 3 hour from Paris and there was a big difference in people's attitudes. South France in particular is supposed to be fantastic.

If you wanna crash on my couch in Dublin, you're welcome to it.

I just moved from Canada to Sweden earlier this year in February...great experience so far. Completely bizarre though when I go back and look at pictures of Toronto on google maps, and it just looks like a whole different universe (in the figurative sense). I'm looking forward to traveling more when I'm not so busy, as its apparently quite cheap to travel around Europe once you're over here.

If cash isn't an issue, explore places that aren't exactly popular tourist destinations.  If I'm to visit Europe (which I hope is soon), my itinerary would definitely include the following:

Monza (Italy)
Nurburg (Germany)
Le Mans (France)
Spa (Belgium)
Montmelo (Spain)
Zeltweg (Austria)
Silverstone (UK)
Monte Carlo (Monaco)

If you're ever in London, I'm sure I'd be able to help you out. MD and Rinoa should be able to vouch for me not being a crazy psycho killer and being a pretty decent tourist guide.

Uh, is it just me or is that a list of popular European racetracks?

Exceptional narcissist

It most definitely is, Zubis, because Silverstone itself is actually a poxy little village with nothing of worth.

It's also definitely worth visiting the North of England, especially if you're female and like guys who apparently look like David Tennant.
