Weapons in Final Fantasy X aren't interchangeable, but specifically designed for each character. Initial weapons (weakest) are equipped by default. More powerful weapons require customizations by donating general items to produce special abilities. By using a certain number of items, you can add an ability to a weapon and upgrade it to a more powerful, elemental/status bearing weapon.

O V E R D R I V E   P R O P E R T I E S
Each character has a series of special attacks known as Overdrives, available when the character's Overdrive Meter approaches 100%. Overdrive meters grow depending on the character's Overdrive Mode. Character's overdrive meters can grow depending on attacks received, inflicted on party members, or based on the amount of damage given to an enemy. New overdrive moves are acquired after performing previous ones a number of times per battle, by acquiring certain items, or through other specialized means specific to the character.
