Card Structure
What are the defining properties of a Triple Triad Card?

Card Values

Card values determine the overall strength of the card when placed in battle (comparing numeric values adjacent to a neighboring card). Values are located on all four sides of the card: top, left, right, and bottom.

Elemental Property

Icon representing the elemental property of the card. This icon is only effective when the Elemental Rule is in play. The icon can either increase or hinder the strength of the card (all four sides) based on the neighboring cards elemental property.

Trade Rule Variants
How do the different rules determine how I obtain and lose cards in Triple Triad?

You can acquire or lose cards in a variety of different ways based on the trade rules of the game.

Trade Rule

One
The winner can choose one card from the opponent.
Diff
The winner can choose a number of cards based on the difference in points. If the winner received 8 points while the loser only received 2, the winner can take 6 cards. This can include cards that weren't used in play. This is the most dangerous trade rule variant.
Direct
Each player takes the cards he/she flipped, regardless of the winner. This is not a recommended trade rule variant to play by, unless you intentionally use cards you do not desire to keep.
All
The winner takes all 5 cards used in gameplay by the opponent.

Game rules for Triple Triad vary, based on the location and geographic region of the population. Your initial set of rules apply to you and will be used in any area that is unfamiliar with them. Rules you acquire from one location that are used on another will bind those rules together if that area is unfamiliar with the rules. For example, using game rules you acquired from Trabia on a card player in Fisherman's Horizon will combine rules between both areas.

If the "Queen of Cards" is located in a region you play Triple Triad at, the rules are randomly selected upon play.

Triple Triad is a tic-tac-toe style card game, in which cards are placed on a 3x3 cell game board. Each card competes for a gained point by outvaluing a neighboring card placed by an opponent, based on the value of the card. Each card has a different value on each side. For example, if the number on the top side of your card is higher than the bottom number of your opponents card and is placed on a cell below the card, you gain a point. This technique is known as "flipping."

Cards can be acquired typically by defeating enemies, mugging them, completeing subquests, and battling characters to a game of Triple Triad throughout the entire world. Rules vary, based on where you've played and what your opponent may desire to play under.

Many different games can be played with Triple Triad cards, based on the skill level and desire of your opponent. The resulting rules don't necessary change the basic gameplay, but what cards can be played and how they're obtained after the game is completed. Make sure you know the rules well or you may end up losing valuable cards. You can always reset the rules by talking to the young girl near the sea dock in Balamb.

Elemental Rule
Same Rule
When the Elemental rule is in effect, certain elemental symbols become scattered upon the playing area. If you play a card with an elemental type identical to the spot you play it, all sides of that card gain a value. If you play a card on an elemental symbol that doesn't match, whether it has no elemental standing or a different one from the symbol in the space you play it, it loses a value of all its sides.
Same works often when you least expect it. Same comes into play when you play a card that possesses the same exact values as the cards they touch. For example, if Player A plays a card with a 2 to the left and a 3 to the right inbetween two cards, both adjacent cards having those same values, Player A would possess all three cards.
Plus
Random Rule
Plus works much like Same. When the Plus rule is is effect, if Player A plays a card between or adjacent to two other cards, and the values of two sides add up to the same amount, all three cards are captured by Player A.
Random forces to take a hand randomly selected from your available cards. One of the roughest rules in the game if you have lots of low-quality cards in the back of your deck.
Open Rule
Sudden Death
Open enables you to see your opponent's hand during gameplay. Useful in planning strategy, but remember that your opponent can also see your hand, too.
Sudden Death means no draws are allowed. The game is played until there is a decisive victor. In the event of a seeming draw, the cards are distributed by color to the respective people. However, they're distributed at the time of teh draw, so any cards you've captured are going to be used in your hand, and vice versa.
