You can also activate the target menu by pressing L1 in battle, engaging an extra window which will list enemies when selecting which to attack. Before you can even set foot in Memoria you'll need to fight this boss. Be prepared for a very tough fight, and equip your characters with equipment that protects you from wind and water-elemental attacks. Heal the party each and every turn your healer gets. If you're protected against wind and water attacks your party should mostly be safe from all the Nova Dragon's attacks.

The Nova Dragon has a weak point that can be exploited to make this battle much easier than it really is. Have a party of Zidane, Quina, Vivi, and Garnet. Make sure they all have the Insomniac ability equipped. Now have Quina use Night to instantly put the Nova Dragon to sleep. Magic attacks will damage the boss without waking it up, so have Vivi use Blizzaga, and Garnet summon Shiva repeatedly while Zidane steals. If the Nova Dragon wakes up, simply have Quina use Night again to keep the Nova Dragon from attacking you.

Being the God of Fire, Maliris is weak to any ice or water attack, so inflict as much ice-elemental damage as possible. Maliris will also cast reflect, so make sure you do the same and bounce spells off a reflected character to damage Maliris. He has significant HP and strength, so make sure you cure your party often and use recovery items on the character you're bouncing spells off of.

Tiamat will cast Float on your party to make his wind attacks more powerful. Counteract to return your characters to the ground while casting magic and attacking physically. As the battle progresses, Tiamat will blow characters out of the battlefield in which they'll receive no AP after the battle, however if all the remaining characters are swooned, you will lose.

Although Kraken has two tentacles which focus attacks on your party, your primary target should be Kraken himself. Thunder attacks will give you the best magic attack while your other party members can attack physically. Decent equipment is available to steal, but make sure to keep your HP up.

Not too much more powerful than your previous encounter, your additional party member support helps size up the situation. Watch out for constant quake attacks, in addition to venom. Fire, wind, and holy attacks are helpful, and there is some nice equipment to steal. Again, keep your HP high.

F R I E N D L Y   M O N S T E R   P R O P E R T I E S
Throughout the world of Final Fantasy IX, you may encounter a friendly monster in battle who is looking for an item more than a fight. Of course, attacking a friendly monster will cause it to run away. However, should you give the friendly monster the item its looking for, you will be treated with an AP bonus and an item in return.

As listed in order on the friendly monsters page, take the winning item and give it to the next friendly monster. After you've exchanged all the necessary items between monster to monster, you'll have finished a sub quest which enables you to battle the optional boss Ozma at short range. Consult the secret boss page for information and tactics on this boss.

Offering
Win Item
The item the friendly monster will want. If you give the friendly monster this item, you'll be treated with bonus AP and the battle will end.
Item you'll acquire after the battle is over. Some friendly monsters will simply drop spoils while others will drop important items necessary to give to the next friendly monster.
