By pressing the SELECT button during a battle and highlighting an enemy or boss, the moogle help screen aside the command command menu will display the name. You can also activate the target menu by pressing L1 in battle, engaging an extra window which will list enemies when selecting which to attack. Multiple enemies of the same type are given letters to differentiate. For example, if you're encounter 2 Zuu's, they'll be labelled Zuu A and Zuu B. To deactivate the help screen, simply press SELECT again. To deactivate the target window, press L1 again.

Acquiring AP
How do my abilities grow via AP after defeating an enemy or boss?

After defeating an enemy or boss, your equipment and active abilities gain the total AP collected from each defeated monster. After an ability is acquired, it remains as a character trait and can still be used even if the magic stones are removed or the ability unavailable from a different equipping.

Deathguise is extremely powerful, so make sure you have characters with maximum HP greater than 6000 and higher than 4500 at any time. As a flying monster, demi magic can be useful, as well as wind and ice. Reis's Wind is helpful as well as Steiner's Shock. Devote at least one character to doing nothing but healing your characters at all times, either it be recovery items, magics, or Eidolions. After this battle is complete, make sure you head back down the path to resave.

For these next battles, it really helps if you are maxed out on Hi Potions. Get rid of all your normal Potions, if you haven't already. They will have no use. Whatever four characters you bring into this battle, you will have the upper hand on Kuja if you bring them in equipped with Auto-Life, Auto-Regen, Auto-Reflect, Auto-Potion, and High Tide. If you have to choose between them, leave out Auto-Reflect. It's nice, but not totally necessary.

As for characters, go with the ones that you feel best fit your style of play. However, a few general strategies for the use of characters are recommended. Zidane can serve a double purpose in this battle, attacking when needed (Thievery comes in useful here), and if necessary, using a turn to use an Elixir or Phoenix Down. If you bring Dagger, try to equip her with the Concentrate ability, as she will be able to probably bring the whole party up to full strength with one Cure 3. If you have Auto-Reflect, equip Vivi with Reflect x2 and cast Flare on one of your party members; if not, just have him Focus and cast it normally. If Steiner has the Ragnarok, he should use Shock every turn. Amarant's Aura and Spare Change abilities can be very useful. If you have Freya, using a maxed out Dragon Crest can deal an enormous amount of damage. Eiko should always be ready to cast a Full-Life or Phoenix in case someone does get killed, and Quina should be using the strongest Blue Magic that s/he has, and can also heal with White Wind if need be. Use Trance skills like Grand Lethal as they become available.

Anyway, just take your characters into battle fully prepared. Start hitting him with your best attacks, making sure to keep your party's HP at maximum as much as possible. Kuja has several attacks that he can use on your party, including Flare, Holy, and Flare Star, and can also cast Reflect on himself and heal with Cure 3. His attacks will become more frequent as the fight progresses, and near the end he will be attacking you after every move you make.

Take ALL of your green Ability gems and put them into as many status guarding abilities as you can, like Jelly, Locomotion, etc. This is why you have (hopefully) built up a lot of them over the course of the game; you'll thank yourself for this during this battle. Take any remaining gems and put them into abilities such as Auto-Potion and Auto-Regen. If you can manage it, Auto-Life will also help out a great deal in this battle.

Necron has several different attacks that can make your life hell if you're not prepared.

Grand Cross: THIS is the reason for all the status guarding abilities. This little spell inflicts EVERY SINGLE status effect in the game on you, including Death, if you're very unlucky. Every time this spell is cast, cross your fingers and say a little prayer.
Blue Shockwave: This spell reduces a single character's HP to 1.
Neutron Ring: This spell can inflict, on average, anywhere from 1500-3000 HP worth of damage on your entire party, which is bad enough, but he also has the annoying habit of casting it almost immediately after Grand Cross.
Various Level 3 Elemental Spells cast on the entire party.

Necron loves to cast Protect and Shell on himself, so be prepared for that as well.

For the most part, just use the same tactics as you did in the battle with Trance Kuja. Wail on him with your characters' strongest attacks, and keep your HP as high as possible. If you use Amarant, his Aura can be a lifesaver here, and now is also the time to have him chuck any remaining throwable items left in your inventory. Steiner and Freya can be a big help with Shock and Dragon Crest, respectively. If Zidane trances, spare no mercy with the Grand Lethals. Make sure to cure yourself and remove any status effects as soon as Grand Cross is cast, because, as I said before, he has a nasty habit of following Grand Cross up with a Neutron Ring. Just keep up the constant pressure until he starts throwing out random quotes that you may recognize form the ending of Final Fantasy IV, and you'll have finished Final Fantasy IX.

Throughout the world of Final Fantasy IX, you may encounter a friendly monster in battle who is looking for an item more than a fight. Of course, attacking a friendly monster will cause it to run away. However, should you give the friendly monster the item its looking for, you will be treated with an AP bonus and an item in return.

As listed in order on the friendly monsters page, take the winning item and give it to the next friendly monster. After you've exchanged all the necessary items between monster to monster, you'll have finished a sub quest which enables you to battle the optional boss Ozma at short range. Consult the secret boss page for information and tactics on this boss.

Offering
Win Item
The item the friendly monster will want. If you give the friendly monster this item, you'll be treated with bonus AP and the battle will end.
Item you'll acquire after the battle is over. Some friendly monsters will simply drop spoils while others will drop important items necessary to give to the next friendly monster.
