Excalibur II

I'm replaying through FF IX for the first time in nearly a decade and was wondering if anyone ever bothered to get Excalibur II? It is one of the few things I've never done in the FF's and can't really see the point to it. Am I right in thinking you basically sacrifice a decent game in order to get this weapon or can you get it and then go back and finish off a near perfect game?

<span style="color: #3366ff;">I never bothered, honestly. Speed-runs aren't my cuppa tea, and when I play a game I love like FFIX, I want to go through at my OWN pace. </span>

I know how they work

I've never gotten it either. Not only does speeding through the game like that rub me the wrong way, but I'd go ballistic if I ended up doing a majority of the game then narrowly missed getting the sword.

It's almost impossible for me to rush a game. I'm either checking every nook and cranny for items and descriptions or I'm soaking in whatever atmosphere it has to offer.

It's called Gameshark, son.

I was wondering when this was going to come up. ;) I did it. Took me about a month of real time, but I managed to snag the thing in 11:20:01, game time.

Traveller independently proved for FFO that a Perfect Excalibur II Saved Game was possible. Yeah, he did the jump rope mini-game, too.

Hmm, I might see if I can get this to work as like I've said I've never got the item. Don't know how/if a gameshark works with PCSX though.

If PCSX is compatible with ePSXe plugins, download the [pec] plugin from <a href="https://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/psx/psxplugins-tools.html";>here</a>. It replaces the video plugin (with a software pass-through, so you can still use your choice of video plugin), plus an external program to load Gameshark cheats.

It doesn't come with very many useful FFIX codes, though, you'll have to hunt better ones down and load them in the user database under the file menu.

I've done the Excalibur II quest and it was a bad experience. I recommend against it.

^ Attaining the highest Tetra Master rank-- That's a bad experience.

The King's orders are absolute

I never attempted the Excalibur II quest, seemed like such a waste, rushing through an RPG to unlock something in the final dungeon.

Let's Play Chrono Trigger
Let's Play The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past
Let's Play Final Fantasy VI

I've done it, and since I'm a perfectionist, I did it and got a perfect file as well(max Tetra Master rank too). I believe I did this before the EXIIPG craze even started, and I remember the guy who eventually made the go-to guide for an EXII perfect run actually PM'ing me here at the time with a few questions.

Of course, my perfect file doesn't include things like max stats(since there is no such thing in FFIX, and any attempt is just arbitrary choices), or flagging every event, since I don't believe that has anything to do with a perfect file, and usually conflicts with it at certain points. Everything I would normally do on a regular "perfect file", though, I did on my ExII run. Took a long time and probably a good portion of my sanity.

I don't recall Traveller having anything to do with the FFIX ExII perfect run, though...

I thought to remember that Traveller had done it as well, either way it's not something I even decided to try. A.) The name of the Sword sucks. B.) I'm in the same camp with most of the thread where I want to enjoy the game and speed runs aren't me. The completionist in me wants to do it, but at the same time, I just don't see it being anything but tedious.

In terms of raw statistics it will not make a real difference in gameplay. Steiner can do 9999 just fine with any of his other weapons, Ex II won't get you there more than a level or two sooner.
