FFT (PSX) or FFT:WotL

Both have their merits, but I'm curious as to which version people prefer. Honestly? I like both, but for different reasons.

FFT

(1) No slowdown

(2) Reduced JP/job requirements make for an easier time setting up challenge runs or unique unit setups; trying to do some of the stuff I want to do in WotL makes me want to cry with the increased grind time

(3) Less retarded person/place names (Folmarv? Argath? Zierchele Falls, really?)

WotL

(1) Improved translation (I don't mind the flowerly language, just the stupid new names)

(2) More roster space

(3) Added story scenes and battles

(4) Two new characters and two new jobs

I don't list multiplayer as a plus for WotL because it's not an option for me at this point. Technically, I'll probably never use the Onion Knight job, and I'm only just working towards unlocking Dark Knight in my current casual playthrough. I can't really justify using Balthier in his base class because I try to avoid overpowered setups when I play these days, same for Cid. Most of the new items in WotL are only available via multiplayer so I'm out of luck there. As much as I love Ramza and his Ubersquireness, I'm not really impressed with Luso more-or-less being a clone, though the innate poach is nice. However, I'm a sucker for extras and I love the added story info that fleshes out Wiegraf and the Delita/Ovelia relationship, as well as the new sidequests and the battles involved.

Since I'm a sucker for the game, no matter the version, I'm kinda tempted to buy the original FFT on the PSN: that way I have portability for either game and can play whichever strikes my fancy or suits whatever gameplay purposes I happen to have at the time.

So FFS, what's your favorite flavor? Original, WotL, or something else?

I think the strengths of WotL outweigh its weaknesses compared to the (US) original. I just wish when they ported WotL here they made the balance changes to the gameplay that the original US release of FFT made. They made an effort to reduce some of the slowdown at least.

Yes, what of it?

I LOVED War of the Lions. The extra content (not counting multiplayer) was worth it. I loved the extra missions, and how they added more background to the extra characters. How generics actually said something when you hit select on their name in the menu was nice, and provided some funny moments. The new classes were fun, and I got a chance to find the use in some I didn't use before this time around.

The things I didn't like were how in some of the extra quests, the bosses of those had portraits that didn't fully fit into the art style as well, and that you couldn't steal the Genji Equipment off of Elmdore.

I was worried about the translation since Alexander O. Smith went a little too Shakesperian in FFXII for me, but I thought WotL was just right. All in all, I bought the game twice, once on UMD, and again on PSN. I'll probably get the PSone Classic Version as well, just because I love having that game on hand wherever I go.

The additional little changes made WotL become my favorite game ever. Both are wonderful, but WotL really took me to a happy place in gaming that I hadn't been to in a very long time.

Also while some of the names do sound real silly (like Folmarv lawl), I think a lot of the name changes people complain about are due to being more familiar with the original names than anything. I wonder what someone who had no familiarity with FFT would think of the names when you took the original and WotL names and put them next to each other.

Crono can cross dimensions too!

WotL all the way. I can deal with the minor slowdown magic spells give you (and after 10 hours you hardly notice it anyways) for the much, MUCH improved translation and added content. I love overpowered team members and Balthier is in the same God-tier as Orlandu in that aspect. Sure, some names are silly now but we saw this with the VI remake as well and it's minor.

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

I've only got guff with War of the Lions on three counts: the slowdown (aggravating), the lack of sanity-checked JP costs (anyone who tells you the original Japanese ability costs made the game "more challenging" is an imbecile), and a translation that, while commendable, proves Joseph Reeder is no Alexander O. Smith.

Even so, the PSP port absolutely reignited my love for the game.

You're probably right; I won't deny that nostalgia is likely playing a factor in how I feel about the new names. Oddly enough though, that's really the only thing with the new translation that's ever given me pause. The rest of the translation, as well as the new names for skills and jobs, are a solid improvement in my eyes.

Also, the slowdown doesn't actually bother me that much either; as Crono said, you kinda get used to it after awhile. If anything, some of the sounds being off annoys me more (Unholy Darkness used to sound a lot cooler). But those are minor quibbles and I do have to agree with the general consensus that WotL is the better version. I just wanted to spark some new conversation about an old favorite

That reminds me... I absolutely HATED how they changed the scream sound effect after the bosses transform. The PSone version put chills down my spine the first time I heard it. The PSP version was terrible.

The only name change I disliked was Algus to Argath. Folmarv was bad, but on the whole, it was alright to me.

Oooh, I'd forgotten about the transformation sound, that one is pretty bad too. To balance out that little complaint, I will add that I love that Meliadoul's sword skills can be used on monsters now; makes her a lot more useful if you want to keep her in her main class.

Meliadoul comes off as much less redundant now, and her encounter with Kletian in War of the Lions, while small and easily missed, does add something to the game. I actually do, by and large, approve of what was added to the story - Wiegraf, Rofel, Ovelia, Delita, and especially Agrias all got some fantastic new scenes, and the Beowulf/Reis quest in Chapter 4 was excellent. Not so sure about Deathknight Algus. While it's a fun fight, and he and Ramza get to trade some nasty shots, it doesn't make a lot of sense why the Lucavi would bother to beef up some Lv10 grunt (unless it was to fuck with Ramza's head?). Then again, who ever said the Lucavi were smart about, well, anything?

With all the name changes I'm surprised Wiegraf wasn't changed to Wiglaf to make the Beowulf references complete.

Algus was such a sniveling, position driven turd though. I thought it was great that he got another chance. I can totally see them using him due to his obsession with class status, and how he was so easily (willingly) manipulated to follow the Lucavi's cause simply out of the desire to look down on someone.

I loved being able to use Meliadoul's skills on monsters a well. Though I never seem to use anyone outside of Ramza and the Generics now. The only thing I would have wanted added to the game was more job classes to mess with. I found new life with my party this time around, experimenting with Geomancers, and Dark Knights. I finally found a use for nearly every class this time. I could mess around with the game forever.

I don't mind having another opportunity to stomp Algus, but I'm willing to bet that the added fight is a stumbling/stopping block for a lot of the old challenges, mainly SSCCs and ones that are magic-based.

And Plumbum, I have to agree with you about experimenting with new classes; my first Squad Challenge on the PSX version finally showed me what I'd been missing with Geomancers and my newer challenge on the PSP is making me appreciate Bards and Dancers more than I used to. I'm kinda tempted to start a new challenge thread here once I finish posting my current one on the FFO thread, or maybe just a general thread for people to post about their challenge runs or experiments with unit setups, etc. I'm currently running a casual playthrough in addition to my Squad Challenge, and trying out some interesting unit configurations that I found while trawling through the Gamefaqs boards

I'm thinking about giving the "All Geomancers" SCC challenge a try. I also came to appreciate Bards/Dancers on my last playthrough. I had fun with oracles, but the guy I used I ended up dropping that skill so he could be a Bard Chemist, with Sticky Fingers. I got quite a few Chaos Blades that way.
