In FFX, how does your conversation with Yunalesca in the Zanarkand Temple not count as a big reveal?

I don't think waiting until 95% of the game is completed to add a diolog that changes perspective is quality plot twists in a video game. In a movie, perhaps, but in a FF game you should have a 2nd half at least to enjoy the plots new direction. That's just my opinion. Not to say that FFX and beyond didn't have some cool reveals to further deepen their stories, I just felt those reveals were trying to make up for a basic bitch game.

Regarding Luna (super spoilers)

Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.

Developers and people behind the game kept talking about how strong she was as a character.

I don't see it and she just existed to provide exposition and become a plot device with her death so they can have an excuse to add tension with the group.

This would be the kind of stuff Anita Sarkeesian would be pissed about in games.

I guess I can see where you are coming from, but respectfully, I believe that you are engaging in an unfair level of revisionism by tying FFX to later games that re-used its plot formula with poor results. In my view, that would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

But I'm not trying to imply the story was perfect, either. The middle part of the game, during the pilgrimage northward, definitely drags in places and the story might have been even better if they trimmed out some of the fat and elaborated on the post-Zanarkand part as you said. Maybe they could have explored the new angle of Seymour as an antihero as opposed to the cardboard cutout he had been before. A couple minutes of flashback visions inside an optional dungeon at the end didn't work so great.

Imperial dropships make me not want to play this game.

I was doing that stupid red frog quest and literally 6 dropships came.

Interesting article. I happen to agree with a lot of it.

Well, Persona 5 is coming soon. I think I'll just wait for that.

I think it would have helped more if the game's open world has a lot more variety and the sidequests had meaningful interactions that fleshed out the characters. As shuch none of those two hold true in FFXV, as the my latter point the side quest that provided the most character interaction was for a product placement for Nissin Cup Noodles.

So Sigh Ety

15 hours in and I FINALLY reached the first town. Goddamn it the world was supposed to be interesting but 15 hours of exploration with only one town isn't what I'd call an interesting world.   From what I heard there is only one more town in the game.

So far this game will probably end up better than FF13 and below the others. It's an OK game.

I agree with you Spidey as that is the same impression I am getting - this is not a FF game and more a driving/camping simulator with some fighting and lore text tacked on. SE seemed to have completely misunderstood the very fundamentals of just what it takes to make a FF game with this, in that somewhere along the development process FFXV split into two seperate projects - the lore/world buliding/character development side (and much of the old VsXIII content/ideas) ended up being used with the animated projects (Kingsglaive/Brotherhood), and thus what was left for the actual 'game' side was just exploration and fighting, which in my mind is completely wrong. Exploring a vibrant world is one thing, having a reason for doing that is a completely different barrel of moogles, which SE seemed to have completely forgotten or ignored.

I'm still about 9 hours in and still on Chapter 1, and not once have I felt like I need to be anywhere in any particular hurry - nowhere does it seem the fate of Eos is in the balance and everything will go to hell if we don't hightail it to Altissa or wherever it is. Supposedly Noctis needs to go there to marry Luna but, I haven't felt any pressing need for that to take place in that the game itself is just too laid back in it's execution for it's own good - Noctis and his friends just come across as a bunch of college age kids out on a camping trip rather than usual FF protagonists.

Don't get me wrong though, the exploration part is fun and well handled, but in my mind, that is the complete opposite of what a FF game is meant to do at the start (save for the MMOs). The free exploration part is meant to come later in the game, usually when the airship is first gained, and especially when the final dungeon is unlocked. Unlocking the world for exploration is your reward for sticking with the game to the end and one last hurrah before you complete the game, not made available right at the start with nothing but an excuse plot for doing so.

But yes, I fully agree with you Spidey about it definetely being better than FFXIII, but it is not better than other games in the series - hells, I rate FFXII as better than this (useless Vaan and Penelo and all). At least that had a beginning that threw me right into the story (cliched as it was) - trying to prevent an asassination was far more fun than... pushing a broken down car in the middle of nowhere....

People always said FFXIII is not a bad game it's just a bad "final fantasy" game. I really don't understand that rationale because a bad game is a bad game, and a good game is a good game period.

As for FFXV though I think it has enough elements to consider this an FF game.

As for the exploration parth, though, I think it's handled pretty well but I think two things were lacking here and which are pretty big omissions consiering how this game likes to focus on the open world exploration element.

The first being that the world itself is pretty lacking in scope and variety. As beautifull some of the scenic views are the world really isn't that varied and does get stale at times.

The second is the game has no lore, part of the charm of an open world game is understanding the lore and environment of the game's world. The developers really forgot to do some world buildig in this game and sometimes it detatches you from the world you are exploring as a result. Simple things like how come there's a character with a steroy-typical New York Italian accent, while other talk normally, or whats the reason why

one city's power plant is only ran by women
,  what are the origns of the hunters, or how come there is a road network  whens there's demons lurking, or what's the relationship between Lucis and Insomia between the people and such?

Just under 60 hours in, lvl 54-52 party, completed Chapter 9. I'm having an absolute blast with this game; I don't think I've been this absorbed in a Final Fantasy since X. Top 3 material for me!

I'm really enjoying running around and exploring Lucis on foot and by chocobo, but yeah, more actual towns (instead of outposts) would be a very welcome addition. Also better and more varied town music.

Well, you are still on Ch. 1, and as far as your party is concerned, there ISN'T a pressing need to rush straight to Altissa just yet. I purposefully took my time exploring and doing hunts and quests for that reason. I really like that this game opens with a massive explorable world and turns you loose on it within minutes of the opening -- it's a refreshing change of pace for this series.

Good Boy

Well I got rid of this total piece of shit game.  Even FFXIII which I never revisited is still knocking around here somewhere, but this trash (that Square Enix openly admit is an unfinished product, wow) I didn't want in the same house as me.  I'm definitely, 100% done with new FF games now.  I don't even think I'll bother with FF7 remake, let's face it; it's going to be a half made waste of time too.

Final Fantasy is dead, folks.  Time to process through the denial.

What, in your opinion, was the cause of death? And when was the beginning of the end?

Personally, I'd say FFX was the beginning of the end. Don't get me wrong: I love FFX and I consider it the last great Final Fantasy console game. But, that was the first game after Sakaguchi played an active role in development, and it shows. I can definitely see, in FFX, many of the seeds of what grew into FFXIII and beyond.
