It all ends with beginnings...

I liked the vastness of the world, and the ability to explore it.

I liked the game. The game didn't suck.

I did too, I just wanted to hear what people liked about it, as opposed to all the things they hated.

Balthier is one of my favorite Final Fantasy characters. I liked what story was there. Visually, it was beautiful. The License system was fun, as what mark hunting. Those (and the open world you already mentioned) are the big things that come to mind, but I thought it was an awesome game, overall.

Currently playing: Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, Picross DS
Last played: Time Hollow (good)
Last watched: Agent Carter (very good)

What he said; I've never thought of FFXII as a bad game.

<span style="color: #888888;">I thought the battle mechanics was okay, actually. Really, the only gripe I have with FFXII was the subdued storyline and the totally unmemorable (for me) music. Until now I can't hum or remember any FFXII-specific music at all.

I loved the world design. Maybe it's because this is Ivalice with a more unified aesthetic, but I found many of the places awe-inspiring, from the Stilshrine of Miriam to the walkways of Mt. Bur-Omisace. The feeling that you really went to somewhere incredible is very strong in XII, even moreso than in most other RPGs. You can feel the expansiveness of the natural world, and also the skill of man's ability to create timeless architecture.

Also, I really liked the Espers. I liked that they had a more "sinister" vibe about them than the typical FF summons, and that you had to seek them out to do battle with them before you could really use them. Not that I actually used them, but it felt like you were uncovering a secret history when you met up with them. I wish there was more Esper lore in the game.

I loved FFXII. I always like how people bitch about Gambits and how it takes control of the game out of the player's hands. If you don't like Gambits, turn them off and do everything manually.

I enjoyed everything about the game, though I agree the storyline was a little sparse. The world, battle system, and mark hunting were fantastic. I hate nothing more than repeated mashing of buttons. I can play most of FFVII and FFVIII doing nothing more than holding down one button throughout every battle. Still love those games, but why should I enjoy repetition simply because I'm "more involved" in the process? Part of the Gambit system is setting them up correctly to optimize the squad. I hated the same complaint about FFXIII, with Paradigms. Wrong Paradigms, dead characters.

The bestiary is incredible. Pretty much everything else I like was already mentioned (awesome locations and mark hunting). I enjoy the battle system, as well.

I've always believed that the reason people can't really remember the music is BECAUSE of the subdued storyline. It's pretty good ambiance music, but people don't have anything memorable to attach anything to, so it gets lost. I remember the boss battle music with the Mimic early in the game was fantastic. Really, it seems like they tried to do a similiar theme from Vagrant Story. I loved the music, but I have the same problem with that OST.

As for what I liked about XII, was the depth of the world, and the history behind it. I really loved how the beastiary gained more pages after certan quotas for killing each monster was met. It really did a great job of making me want to play more, while building the lore of this mysterious world. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED exploring that world. I didn't stop playing until I went everywhere. The environments became the experience, not the storyline.

I also loved Basch. He was just conflicted enough without being whiny. I'm also one of the few that actually enjoyed Vaan, and was annoyed by Balthier. Balthier grew later on in the game, and I began to enjoy him then, but in the beginning, he came off as cheesy and annoying.

The nostalgia factor

I love seeing which old school game was going to get a reference next.

The world and environment obviously. The fact that exploring the world was seemless enough in that it didn't bother me there was an absense of a world map(until you got conrol of your airship). There was a lot of walikng in the game and it never felt tedious or too long, and random encounters were quick and easy. The gambit system helped with battles but I never felt like they completely controlled everything, even when optimized. I actually enjoyed the story, when you had time to enjoy it. True there were many distractions to the main story with sidequests and hunts, but I liked the idea in which the story was taking it. And being a massive FFT fan, I'll take any good story sprinkeld with Ivalice in it.
