Tell me what didn't suck about FFXII

I loved mark-hunting, and the expansive world. The storyline, not so much. Also, the random chest shit... the fact that if you opened ANY of the wrong chests, the strongest weapon in the game would not be waiting for you. This killed me, especially since there was NO INDICATION ANYWHERE that this would happen. The only way you knew was if you bought and played with a strategy guide. That was ridiculous.

The random drops and percentages for finding rare items was pretty painful in this game. It was an absolute nightmare to obtain the strongest weapons.

I always enjoyed in a game when the strongest weapon was known, however, a difficult quest had to be taken to obtain said weapon of lore... those felt powerful.

Now, as I look back I see the crooked path that I had been set upon all those years before, leading me inexorably to this moment. I can still see her face in my mind's eye, poor dear Laura, such a sad tale is ours. A tale of heroes who strove to save humanity only to lose our own.

I loved FFXII. I always like how people bitch about Gambits and how it takes control of the game out of the player's hands. If you don't like Gambits, turn them off and do everything manually.
I did try that, and it felt like the game was punishing me for not wanting to use them. Even basic battles became difficult.

Of what I played, I enjoyed it and the gambit system did grow on me. However I really disliked having to unlock and buy abilities, which used up alot of money, meaning grinding through the same fights over and over again to get enough to buy them.

Balthier is one of my favorite Final Fantasy characters. I liked what story was there. Visually, it was beautiful. The License system was fun, as what mark hunting. Those (and the open world you already mentioned) are the big things that come to mind, but I thought it was an awesome game, overall.
Don't know that there is much I can add to this. I really enjoyed the battle system too though.

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

I thought what FF XII got out of the PS2 hardware was remarkable.

Ivalice. Immersive, beautiful world that, long after its creator's departure, never fails to tug at my softest heartstrings.

The Bestiary and inventory descriptions, which contribute to the former.

The Goddamn Alexander O. Smith.

Honestly, I love what the game could be, dislike what it is, and actively loathe the executive incompetence that led to its absorption (see: Wings, Revenant; Advance, Final Fantasy Tactics) into the cookie-cutter crap factory mindset that's done nothing but help cost Square-Enix $150 million. Hearing them later say "Ivalice eventually became our world more than Matsuno's" is just...wow, guys.<span style="text-decoration: line-through;">

I'mma be the dark horse and say acting. Great cast, but also fantastic motion capture actors.

The hyper-realistic designs worked, and didn't lead me to uncanny valley. So there's also that.

I thought the mark hunting system was the one of the coolest way to fit hunting NMs into a story in recent games. I had fun doing it.

The Gambit System was something I enjoyed to an extent. It could use tweaking, but I enjoyed having the repetitive things still under my control, yet automated as needed.

The only problem I ever had with the gambit system was motherfucking stealing. Ugh.

Everything had the foundation of something good but was ruined by absolute bullshit.

Mark hunting was a great idea for adding exploration to the game. Too bad every monster they sent you after after the first 3 were 20 levels higher than you.

The combat system was different and made you think on your feet. Too bad every battle was either 30 seconds long or 2 hours long.

The characters had a lot of personality and thought put into them. Too bad the voice acting was pure shit.

The story was pretty dark and complex. Too bad the two main characters are 12 year olds.

The team assembled was the best one imaginable. Too bad they brought in a new director halfway through who said "fuck your shit we're doing it this way."

trust me, i'm a doctor

I loved that I didn't have to use Vaan in combat zones.

And I loved imagining the rest of my party arriving at such and such town, kicking back in the ship's lounge, and sending him out to run errands for them like the little bitch he is.

I loved the rich, immersive world.

I loved the dark storyline.

I loved that it didn't have a love story between two main characters are the core (this is overdone).

I loved Balthier probably more than a woman should love a game character.

I loved the fact that the biggest bad guy did bad things for what he felt were noble reasons. This made him far more complex than most villians.

I loved the liscences.

I actually liked the gambit system, as it made me have to strategize. It gave the game an FFT feel.

By PS2 standards, great Graphics. They still look good too, which is the mark of some good art design choices.

Great voice acting.

A couple great characters. Their names are Balthier and Fran. Basche isn't bad either.

With locations immense, some of them stunning,

A pleasure to travel while walking or running.

The moogles galore,

One wonders what for?

Perhaps just a glimpse of Balthier and Buttbunny.
