Tell me what didn't suck about FFXII

I think FFXII could've been a great game if Square Enix didn't make it. Everything points to their direct involvement really handicapping the game's potential. I'm really not as big a fan of Matsuno as a lot of other people, but I think the game would've ultimately been at least more consistent, if not outright better, if Square Enix marketing didn't butt in at every opportunity (which, I guess, is to be expected when the Final Fantasy series is one of two or maybe three franchises that are actively keeping you in business).

That said, Dragon Age's Tactics are Gambits done completely right.

As for what doesn't suck about FFXII, well, at least it wasn't FF13.

Well, the first part of the game, before the switch to Vaan.

That first FMV in the palace with Balthier on that awesome speeder of sorts. I saw that and was so hopeful for what I was going to get to play with or see.

I loved the rich, immersive world.

I loved the dark storyline.

I loved that it didn't have a love story between two main characters are the core (this is overdone).

I loved Balthier probably more than a woman should love a game character.

I loved the fact that the biggest bad guy did bad things for what he felt were noble reasons. This made him far more complex than most villians.

I loved the liscences.

I actually liked the gambit system, as it made me have to strategize. It gave the game an FFT feel.
This, this, this. And like someone else said, it's not FFXIII. Uggggh.

The World - Massive and huge

The Story - Lacked a bit of polish but it was still well told and I thought pretty unique for an FF game

Characters - Ashe, Belthier, Bash, Fran all were great characters. Vaan and Penelo were ok too. Side characters were great Larsa, Cid, Reddas were memorable

Liscense Board System - I liked it

Side Quest - They are plenty

Localization - Dilalouge and voice acting was really strong and didn't feel like an anime at all

Come to think of it FFXII didn't suck at it ... heck it was a great game

I honestly love the world of XII and I love how you can actually explore it unlike X or XIII. I like/love most of the characters. I think it got delt a poor hand because (to me, at least) it had the potential to be great if it weren't for things exploding during production.

XIII has almost no redeeming qualities whatsoever for me. I put in over FIFTY hours and I just can't be bothered to finish the game. I do not care. The characters all suck. The story sucks. The gameplay is passable, but it's not enough to carry the game to completion for me. XII at least had that (for me).

On the contrary I actually think that FFXII made FFXIII even more worse that it actually is.

Despite all the issues people had with FFXII you have to admit it was the step at the right direction in terms with storytelling, narrative, charaterization, gameplay, and design. We the execution perfect? No but it was the direction FFXII needed to be. With the growing popularity of Western RPG in the years following 2006 they should have stayed in that trajectory.

FFXIII was 5 steps back and was even more evident when you consider FFXII.

Actually I didn't think FFXII's direction was the right way to go at all. As much as I prefer western RPG's these days, FF12 mimicking them or MMO's wasn't something I wanted. Wandering around nondescript deserts and other completely uninteresting terrain while the plot decides to take a vacation for a few hours is not my idea of a good game.

I think there were some major issues with FFXII ... no denying that. The game felt unpolished but I feel that if they went on this direction of the expansive world on the PS3/360 version they could have had something special. I am actually envisionng that the MMO route would have been an FF similar to FFV (lots of exploration, side quests galore, job system, but still a strong story).

Besides considering the alternative (which was FFXIII) ... I would have prefered the style of FFXII to be the one steering the franchise's direction.

Though, I guess, its sad to think FFXII could have been so much better if it were not corrupted by Square-Enix and just let Matsuno do his thing. I think that's what caused FFXII to suffer in terms of overall quality.
