I thought FFXII was a really cool game that took some risks with the standard series tropes and executed them mostly very well. I've never understood why it's so reviled. It's like how IX is the black sheep of the PSX era, for only being extremely good.

XII is about the only FF game I can start up a replay on and have a ton of fun these days, with the mark hunting and finding all the cool weapons. It's also the only single player game I've found that sort of feels like you're in a party in FF11. The whole thing is almost like you're playing an MMO with the party gambit system, and focusing on mobs, experience, and finding all the ultimate weapons.

That, and after my 2nd and subsequent playthroughs I've found that I no longer ONLY like Basch. All the characters have actually grown on me, even Vaan. He's less annoying than a LOT of other mains. But he IS weak for a main character, honestly. If they'd have replaced him with his brother Reks as the main and focused the story a little more on him, it would have been cooler to me, but as it is I still enjoy Vaan's "coming of age/sky pirate primer" story.

I mostly hated the bland characters and story. The gameplay was fine and the world was actually amazingly fleshed-out, but I didn't give a crap about most of the characters, and the story wasn't nearly gripping enough. I would spend hours on end just trudging through the wilderness killing things, and not much else would happen. It was kind of meh. Oh, and random chests. That was just stupid.

IX is the black sheep? That's shocking. It's nearly perfect aside from the slow ATB gauge. If anying VIII is more reviled.
