Honestly, I thought Assassin's Creed 4 was an improvement over AC3 in terms of it's gameplay and story. Those ship battles were a blast.

Big Tall
Taller Than Tall
It's going to be really hard to go back to an older-style AC game after the fun of ACIV. Revelations and III were just...bad. Revelations made things a bit easier to run around the city but I was tired of Ezio. Connor was a HORRIBLE main character in III. I wanted to like him. I tried to. In the end, he was too whiny for me to really care about.
IV However? What a breath of fresh air. I love the "Abstergo Entertainment" slant on the real world parts, but the pirate theme was fantastic. Well, when you were at sea anyway. Most of the land missions were "follow these people without getting caught", which were a pain in the ass. Like Cabs said, the ship battles were a blast. I didn't touch the story for the longest time. I'd leave the docks, my crew would start singing and I'd hit the high seas looking for trouble. It was great.
I'd like to see more variety in the main characters, sure, but I'm really going to miss the sea battles being a main component of future installments.

I think there's room for a pure land-based AC still. Mostly it needs to re-evaluate the mission design. As much as I love ACIV, I wish the land-based missions included much more pure infiltrations, evidence gathering and, well, assassinations, as well as less of those eavesdrop and tail missions. I played AC Liberation HD after IV, and had a lot of fun (despite the clunky interface leftovers from III) precisely because it had probably the best pure assassin mission design since II.
EDIT: And now Ubisoft has released a trailer. Screw the haters, this got me excited. Now to save up for a better gaming PC between now and winter.

I enjoy Assassins Creed, but at the rate they are cranking these out it feels less like an event and more like a grind. I wouldn't have minded if III and IV got a little bit more of the love and attention that ACII got.

Comet apparently puts you in the role of a Templar
. Takes place along the American Atlantic Coast, probably will feature the naval combat, and bringing back Adewale and Haytham and a few other past faces. Those were easily two of the series' best characters, so that's cool. Apparently it's meant to bridge AC3 and 4, storywise.

I am burnt out on this series. I played AC 1, 2+the trillogy, and 4.
After 5 games in a span of 6 years it's lost it's charm. I love history, and I love when people put their own spin on it... but no more can I play the same style of game and not feel like it was a total chore to do so. The Desmond storyline was the biggest draw in for me and it wasn't until I played ACIV that I realized they ended that in 3.
