Ah that's too bad to hear. It looks pretty story driven but do you have a lot of freedom when you play it? Is it even a bit open worldish?

I felt the same about the Uncharted series when I first played them. Then again, I still have a lot of problems with those games.

Yep, still gaming

For some reason, I'm mildly interested in this one (maybe because I think the guy is handsome??) but, "realistic" movie like game, zombies (well "zombie alikes") and post-apocaliptic setting are major no-nos for me. I guess I'll wait to see if the story is worth caring and then I'll watch the story bits in YouTube.

From what I've seen so far, not a bit.  It's all been linear, one area to the next, type stuff.  The only real freedom has been in choosing stealth or open combat when facing enemies, with either choice being refreshingly difficult.  The one-hit-kill Clickers show up pretty damn early too.

Do also bear in mind, before you get too disappointed, that I'm a miserly git who is very, very rarely wowed by any game these days.  What I find to be pretty humdrum could be another man's bestest game ever.  I fully expect people to rave over this as the critics have done, even if I never get beyond feeling underwhelmed.

I'm apparently 33% complete now and I have to admit it's grown on me a bit.  Still can't see it ever justifying the hype, the story continues to leave me cold...but looking at it purely as a version of 28 Days Later: The Game, it can be quite fun at times.  Some sections absolutely nail that horror movie kind of vibe.

So there was some buzz about how the media isn't allowed to talk about the prologue.

Which, uh--

Well.

Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
That's about as predicable as it gets.  I mean, the game isn't about Joel and Ellie and Joel's kid.  Knowing what's coming didn't make the sequence any less intense.  I don't see why they bothered specifying people not talk about it, is all.

I've played about four or five hours now. So far it's decent, and I can corroborate that the reviews are definitely overselling it. I like the whole idea of your vulnerabilty in combat, but sometimes it feels almost *too* sluggish for enjoyment. I hope it grows on me, so far there's been very little to care about the relationship between Joel and Ellie, but I trust that will change.

EDIT: Played further, it's getting better.

Yeah, I agree that the controls are my main problem with the game, it feels so heavy. There are moments when it reminds of how slow the original Resident Evil's controls were.

Just going to copy what I said in another thread.
Playing it on Hard.  I also love playing with bricks.  Clickers fucking suck.  Really like how intense it feels when you're in a room full of them though.  Unless I completely missed them, I've yet to run into a stalker.  Pretty sure that's a good thing.  Oh and Ellie is awesome.

It started out a bit slow but it's gotten MUCH better as I kept playing.  Loving it now.  Upgrade weapon sway as soon as you can and the shooting immediately improves (not that I shoot much in this game).

I think the more sluggish controls is one aspect they've nailed tbh, it's heavy but not too much so.  Every shot feels like it has weight and purpose instead of the usual BAMBAMBAM bullshit we're so used to.

A lot like old RE, non-shitty Silent Hills, and Fatal Frame, I find the clumsy/clunky controls actually heighten the atmosphere of tension.

Yeah, it add to the tension. I'm on the fence to the decision though.

It was clearly an intentional decision to make the controls that way - Nathan Drake's more combat effective in Uncharted, but it makes sense that Joel - a character in his 40s, 50s? - would be slower and a little clumsy.

But should the player have to suffer for it?

It's been years since I shouted at my tv - sometimes I can see clickers coming a mile off, but because Joel's reloading or doing something  that he can't move out of the way. I can't decide if it's a brilliant design decision or a stupid one.

The game does kind of feel like what Resident Evil 4 would have been had it not jumped headlong into the action genre. Escorting included.

This game is amazing, I don't know what the people saying otherwise are smoking. I've gotten genuinely scared at points which hasn't happened for me since F.E.A.R. or Half Life 2. So far it's been a thrill.
