Kickin' it old school

I'm still KMMOed out after a year+ of being glued to Aion.  Looks fantastic, but I'll have to pass.

Have fun!

Been keeping this one on my radar for some time now and I signed up for beta testing but didn't get selected and I'm not hyped enough to mess with the IGN beta key thing.  It looks fun, and I'd like to explore the world, but I've read a lot of things about TERA that sound like they'd get tiresome/stale quickly.  Gonna give it some time and see how launch goes.

The problem with KMMORPGs is that it's really hard to play with one hand.

I know how they work

I doubt my compy can handle it, but I've been keeping my eye on it for a while, so if I ever get around to upgrading I'll check it out.

I think it's best to play it before assuming stuff (ex: cause it's Korean). It really feels more like a semi-open world PSO/PSU.

So I played open beta this weekend.  I got to level 31.  In two days.  Normal exp rates, afaik.  Beta continues tonight but I'm not sure I'll get back on--not because it's bad but because I don't want to get more invested in it, heh.

The tl;dr version is that NA TERA is basically Korean-flavored WoW with more fun combat (feels like more polished Vindictus to me).  If I wasn't still subbing to XIV I'd probably pick this up.  I won't be getting it at launch but I may check back in a few months.  Depends on how GW2 and D3 are, really.

Here are some more thoughts...

Leveling is pretty fast.  Like WoW, you level primarily by doing WoW-like questing.  Doesn't feel KMMO grindy AT ALL.  TERA has "story quest lines" which are longer questlines that form little stories; for example, the first two I completed lead up to the first two dungeons and explained what's going on in them and why it matters to the world at large.  Nothing ground breaking, but a nice touch.

The world and monster designs are fantastic.  Sound design and music are good.  UI takes some getting used to with the way the toggle thing is (if you have ANY menu/inventory/etc. open, you can't move your camera and if you move your character it closes the whole menu) but is otherwise good.

Combat is fun, and I was probably playing one of the most boring classes (sorceress).  The action is fluid and responsive.  The servers were handling the load well, and the game itself is incredibly well optimized to maintain as steady a framerate as it can.  In battle with a party and lots of mobs/spells on the screen?  The game will automatically dial down texture settings, starting with things far away, which is pretty important for a game designed around visual cues and quick reactions.  My computer is about midway between required and recommended specs so I played on custom settings at something like 3.5/5 (for example, character textures maxed but background ones dialed down and shadows off)

I think they have overplayed the "DYNAMIC ACTION COMBAT LOOK AT ME DODGE AND BLOCK" thing a bit in TERA but it definitely does put a certain emphasis on player skill and awareness that most MMOs lack.  Even a class like sorceress is pretty involved against some bosses and BAMs (big ass monsters -- basically similar to WoW's elite mobs except you can solo them with skill)... you can't just stand back and nuke, partly because your effective range is only about 10m for most spells, so you really can't just sit back and snipe fireballs and expect to do good damage, but also partly because most bosses/BAMs move around a lot, so you have to constantly be on the move to reposition.

In-game character customizations are... less complex, at least initially, than something like WoW, but don't really feel limiting.  You have fewer gear slots to worry about.  You can also freely customize your weapon by socketing with "crystals" which are non-permanent enhancements that you can swap out at will, provided you're carrying extras.

For more permanent customization, you can glyph your skills, sort of like WoW's talents and glyph system merged together.  There are lots of options here, but the glyphs will probably boil down to a few "really good" ones for PvE or PvP while the rest will be more situational.  For example, on my sorceress I had a glyph that gives my 8-second-cooldown bread-n-butter AoE nuke a 30% chance to be 0-second-cooldown and it can proc off itself repeatedly (basically old Hotstreak, for you WoW mage players)--naturally NOT getting this glyph would be dumb for PvE.  Others, like increaseing the duration of Sleep would have its uses in either PvE or PvP.  You get the idea.

Gear is... well, it's TERA gear.  Look at a few pictures.  There is no gear slot for pants.  I don't need to say much here.  Dying options are nice.  Crafting seems kinda pointless but maybe comes into play more towards endgame, I don't know.  As I was playing sorceress, weapon was my most important piece of gear.  Overworld mobs seem to be balanced to jump in difficulty every 5-10 levels, and you will need to keep your weapon updated (replace with good dungeon drop and/or upgrade one) to keep the quest exp flowing at a good rate.  After I got a "yellow" (I guess Epic-tier, in WoW terms) weapon in the level 30 dungeon, I was able to 1-shot level 30 mobs with crits from my strongest spell, or 2-shot them with normal hits (before I had to use a rotation of 4-6 different skills--assuming a 1v1 fight).

Here are some screenshots.  Yes, I played as Elin.

First boss in first dungeon.  Not a complicated fight, but pretty fun.  Easy if you focus, but also easy to die if you don't pay attention.

Soloing BAMs is exciting.  Sorceress is fragile but if you can dodge it you can kill it.

This quest boss was pretty tough even for a trio (with no healer).

Here is a quick what I though of the game in quotes.

Okay played a bit more tonight.
Still dont like the design of the world. Way to much animu for animu sake.
I played with Keyboard first and controller 2nd. I liked controller more, but both feel weird and too mushed together...
TOR really spoiled me with voice and the quest system both here in Tera feel very archaic and it really hurts the immersion into the game.
The combat though is alot of fun. Sadly depending on how many skills you get in the game I can see controller players getting the stiff.

Buggle Up! Danger! Danger! (Genocide!) Death the Crisis! Dangerous Zombie!

I played KBM exclusively.  I only got to level 31 (I think beta was capped at 32, so "only" level 31).  I had 15 skills hotbarred that I used reguarly.  The KBM controls felt really good, though having skills hotkeyed to F# keys took some adjustment.  Game is too fast paced to be fumbling through a limited number of controller buttons, but I guess if they designed a different interface for it it could work.

The way they did the controller was a great idea acutally.

I got to 38 on cbt and got to 32 on obt.

screens forever!
https://on.fb.me/teragallery

Though most of you have probably seen it on my facebook.

should mention that I'm a controller user. I use a hybrid of tera/ff11/psu settings to play on a ps3 controller. IMHO the game is better on controller, as the game plays like a console game.

There is nothing to be fumbling on with controller. To key more skills on controller you just hold the R/L triggers to access alternate palettes. At 38 Sorc I had places for nearly all my skills+ 2 items + other commands. I didn't hotkey maybe 2-3 spells I never use. Considering mages have an assload of skills and I played all of them up to at least 20 I can confirm they work quite well on controller.

This is how I was imagining it could work out (hold __ for alternate paletts similar to XI macros).  Still, to me the mouse is just way easier to use for aiming and camera control so yeah.

I use both analog sticks for moving and aiming together, in a FF11/PSU way. You don't have to worry about scrambling to use the triggers during action, because you can assign a button for your chain skills and arrange your chains accordingly anyway.. which is even needed on keyboard because there are so many skills and your hands will definitely have to contort without it.

Seems more american reviewers are coming around and realizing this is a legit game. For over a year people (including this thread) were prejudiced against it for being an ~asian~ mmo.

I'm glad he mentioned the player skill. I soloed BAMs myself and it does get your heart racing esp when one or two hits mean death on Sorc. Meanwhile, playing with shitty members is definitely a terrible thing indeed. You can't survive half-assing it in this game, shitty playerskill = die right away.
