X actually has the (almost) same issue as VI where you actually go in with everyone though so I just put down the 3 biggest damage dealers/abusable.

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

FF1: A lot of different combinations, but my favorites were Knight, Master, White Wizard, and Black Wizard and 4 Knights. :P 4 Masters were also apparently super broken in endgame, but I could never get past the early game monk's squishiness.

FF6: Celes, Terra, Edgar, Sabin. Also liked using Locke and Relm, too.

FF7: Cloud, Tifa, Cid. Barrett and Vncent saw a lot of use, too.

FF8: Squall, Irvine, Quistis

FF9: Zidane, Vivi, Freya, Garnet or Eiko

FF10: Everyone, even in the final battle. Wakka and Kimahri saw a little less use by the end, but I used the party switching mechanic big time.

Comes and goes like the wind...

FFVI my main party was always Shadow, Mog, Locke, and Setzer (my four favorite characters in the game). With second group being Terra, Celes, Edgar, and Sabin.

But I think I remembered wanting to rework this for Kefka's tower, so that Mog was actually in the third party and his moogle charm saved the random battles from the weakest group.

Shadow / Setzer / Locke / Celes
Terra / Edgar / Sabin / GoGo
Mog / Umaro / Cyan / Gau

This ended up being my final groupings to even things out, and GoGo is surprisingly useful at high levels.

FFI - Knight, Master, White Wizard, Black Wizard
FFV - Bartz (Samurai w/ X-fight), Lenna (Time Mage w/ Combine), Krile (Blue Mage w/ Summon), Faris (Ninja w/ Equip Ribbons)
FFVI - Celes, Terra, Locke, and Sabin I think were my top four characters. It's been too long since I last played FFVI.
FFVII - Cloud, Tifa, and Vincent I think. It's been even longer since I last played FFVII.
FFVIII - Squall, Selphie, and Irvine
FFIX - Zidane, Steiner, Dagger, and Vivi
FFX - Everyone I guess.

As best I remember -

FVI - Never had a fixed party aside from Edgar. Because everyone was so unique, Shadow, Gau, Locke, Sabin, Mog and Umaro all had runs in my team.
VII - Cloud, Cid, Red XIII
VIII - Squall, Irvine, Zell
IX - Zidane, Quina, Garnet, Steiner
X - Tidus, Rikku, Kimarhi
XII - Balthier, Ashe, Fran
XIII - Lightning, Fang, Hope

So the moral of the story is I used to prefer guys, then recently switched to girls. And consistently like hairy beast types. Go figure.
