Laptop issues

The King's orders are absolute
Earlier today, I left my laptop running while I was out of the house for awhile, and when I got back, it was only particially into power saving mode, in that the screen had gone dark but the power lights were still lit up as if it were still being used. And nothing I did could get it out of this sleep state so I had to manually power it down and restart.
I had another problem a couple nights ago where my laptop crashed when it was trying to load up AIM and I had to use an Ubuntu boot disc, that I had made for my desktop so I could salvage my data from it, to get things running again. When it crashed, I got a black screen that told me that part of Windows had disappeared and it needed to shut down to prevent any lose of data. The next time I powered it on after using the boot disc, everything went back to normal.
Are these things I should be concerned about, and how concerned should I be? I upgraded AIM and it's running a lot smoother for me now, but I don't know about what happened today. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What kind of laptop is it and are you running the OS it came with or have you formatted clean?
Could be the motherboard or HD starting to go.
I made this for you!

There's a whole lot of issues here. It could be anything, but an interesting thought, do you have a cat or small dog or something that might walk on your KB while you weren't at it? There's a key to turn the screen off and on occasion my cat finds it just right, which would cause some of the behavior.

It's a HP G60 Notebook and I'm running the OS it came with, Windows 7 Home Premium.
I hadn't thought of any of the cats walking on the keyboard, though I have had to move them away from the laptop in the past. I guess that could have happened.

I had a problem on an old Dell laptop where I would open the screen (never put the thing in power saving or sleep mode) and the screen would just be off and it would require a reboot to get the screen right again. Soon after the sound card went out and I finally realized the thing was running super hot because I never cleaned it out and I never kept it on a laptop riser thing, just on my lap or on a cloth covered chair. Screen still went out occassionaly and the sound card never recovered, had to use one of those USB soundcards.
Might want to open it up and get some canned air in there to clean out the fan. Never use the thing straight on your lap if you can avoid it.
With my newer laptop, it's always on one of those cooling mats and I clean the thing out periodically when the temps start reading high.
