Watch that review that I posted before you. A Serbian Film really does, honestly have a point. It's just a matter of digging through a mountain of shit in order to get a dollar.

"Of Christ's twelve Apostles Judas alone proved to be traitor. But if he had acquired power, he would have represented the other eleven Apostles as traitors, and also all the lesser Apostles whom Luke numbers as seventy." - Leon Trotsky

I have a blog. This is its URL. You should read it. It's about education and skepticism and books and it has a lot of pictures of Batman and Robin in it: https://baldermoon.wordpress.com/

Except that said digging is an emotionally abusive chore and by the time it's all over, it's not even a dollar, it's more like a couple of pennies and a nickel at the most.

On the other hand, I suppose any movie that is trying to condemn something has to show what it's condemning to some degree or else there's no emotional pull for the audience.

Right. A lot of the most meaningful movies ever made make you feel like you've been emotionally abused. Anti-Christ, for example, was one of the best movies of the year when it came out, and I never want to watch it ever again. In the end, it's all about whether the message in the movie was worth what the movie puts you through. Anti-Christ is worth it, and A Serbian Movie isn't. I think there are much better ways to convey the message, "Serbia is a total fucking mess from top to bottom, and we need to seriously consider this shit" than NEWBORN. PORN.

Still here...

Have read the summary and seen some video reviews of the movie, and I have no intention of ever seeing it. If it hasn't overtaken Cannibal Holocaust as the most disturbing movie ever it seems to have come pretty close. Suffice to say neither is on my list of films to view. Hell, I can't even legally view Cannibal Holcaust in this country, the film is banned in it's entirety.

On that note, has anyone here managed to sit through Cannibal Holocaust?

I have, a few times actually, and barring the utterly irredeemable and revolting real animal killings that are present in the film, I actually respect what the director was trying to say.

So basically, the director of A Serbian Film tried to outdo Salo? No thanks.

Has anyone here ever seen Salo and think it's a good film? I think it's one of the most pretentious things I have ever seen. I bet that nobody would have understood that the scenes involving shit eating are a metaphor for factory processed foods if the director didn't say that's what he intended in an interview before the movie came out. When a director has to explain his intentions outside the context of the movie itself, he hasn't made a good movie at all.

Cinema Snob's review of Salo is worth watching, even if you have no intention of watching the movie itself. He doesn't show any of the worst parts of the movie.

I can't say I enjoy Salo, but I do appreciate and respect what was said and how it was filmed. The cinematography is something I've always found fascinating about Salo, especially the scenes where the old mothers/prostitutes are telling their stories. I'll admit that I didn't really understand the sh*t-eating scene until I read about it somewhere, but I still understood during even my first viewing that the overlying message for the film is a denouncement of fascism, as in the corruption of absolute power. It's like the saying "Give someone an inch and they take a mile."

HALE YEAH

CHALLENGE COMPLETE

This is one of the most heavy handed films with a message I have ever seen. You can get the message from the first thirty minutes and the last five minutes of the film. I'm not too sure I really have any beef with the crazy stuff in the film because it's a movie. But it's not a particularly notable movie apart from the fact that it's a relatively decent Serbian film and it's full of crazy shit.

I mean it's not an awful film, but it's certainly not a good film. I am never watching it again. Not because it was particularly draining, but because it isn't really worth watching again.

I know how they work

Not really worth it's own thread, so:

/tv/ introduced me to Megan is Missing.  Jesus fuck.  A Serbian Film is softcore Showtime fare compared to it.  I mean, I eventually watched A Serbian Film after seeing everyone's reactions to it, and I wasn't fazed at all.  I now feel sick after the last twenty minutes of Megan is Missing.

The best description I've read for it is, "Megan is Missing is the cinematic equivalent of waking up to your uncle molesting you."

Challenge....complete. As much as it pains me to say so. I felt dirty throughout the whole damn ordeal, and those last twenty minutes....Ugh, yeah, my stomach was in knots. Talk about your abhorrent cinema. What makes it worse is the realism of it all. I felt gutted after watching Megan is Missing. Just plain gutted.

That's an oversimplification of how the Serbian cultural mindset affects people, but yeah.
