George Lucas is adding to Star Wars again...

Fincher
Deep Water Horizon

I don't hold the "art can never be updated" attitude; I can appreciate the concept of a director's cut even when it's not as good as the theatrical version. However, while there are changes Lucas has made that I liked and ones that I didn't, what's starting to annoy me is not how much has been changed but how gradually it's been changed. If Lucas wanted to add a "No" or two to RotJ, why didn't he do it in the special edition? We don't need a dozen versions of the same movie. It just seems like he's picking at the series at this point, like a kid who doesn't want to eat his food, so he keeps pushing it around the plate. Maybe it's time he came up with a new series to play with.

Currently playing: Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, Picross DS
Last played: Time Hollow (good)
Last watched: Agent Carter (very good)

Still here...

The problem is more that he won't make the original versions available, at least not in decent quality.

He doesn't seem to have the ability to come up with anything new. What creativity he once had is long gone. That said if he wants to alter something, may I recommend Howard the Duck. He can go mess around with that movie to his heart's content and nobody will complain.

Everyone said that when He did that on DVD, but then he released them on DVD.

Except that the DVD versions are VHS quality and not even remotely cleaned up at all. It was totally petulent and even more of a middle finger to the fans than everything else that he's done.

I have a blog. This is its URL. You should read it. It's about education and skepticism and books and it has a lot of pictures of Batman and Robin in it: https://baldermoon.wordpress.com/

Oh my god! They're threatening to continue with their creepy Lucas obsession WITHOUT buying it this time. What a concept.

Can there be a single man signing that petition that doesn't already own at least two versions of each movie?

Oh, I'm just amazed that it took 14 years for these people to come up with the daring idea to just not buy something they didn't like.

(*should probably point out that changes were even made to the original VHS releases in the 80s, but why bother*)

I think people generally object to what they see as negative changes. Speaking for myself, I cannot see what the addition of the (infamous) "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!" adds to the ROTJ scene (and in fact, I think it detracts; less is more, in that particular case). On the other hand, there was no negative outcry over the replacement of Ian McDiarmid over the original actor in the Emperor's lone scene in Empire, in fact all I ever saw was people heralding it as a positive and welcome alteration. All changes are, of course, a subjective thing; it's worth noting that most of the changes have been perceived as poor ones, though.

Like hell there wasn't any negative outcry over McDiarmid in Empire. FFO alone was a giant ball of fury when that shit popped up seven years ago.

I think the mystifying point is that these changes are spectacularly MINOR.

I actually watched the original trilogy in its entirety for the first time only when the SEs came out in 1997, so I didn't even know that Greedo originally didn't shoot first. When I learned otherwise, it didn't affect me a whole incredible lot. Not that I think adding a "NOOO!" at the end of Jedi is particularly brilliant or anything but mountains out of molehills and all that jazz.
