Crisium
N/A

His site says this:

Equipment:
ATIK 383L Camera
Televue NP127is Refractor
CGEM Mount

Stack of Ha, S2, and OIII - Multiple 20 and 40 min. exposures

Software:
Maxim DL
Photoshop CS5

I have no idea about what those things are though.  I just know whenever it's a clear night he's taking pictures all night long (at the sacrifice of his sleep).  And on days when it's not clear (most nights in Pittsburgh) he's spending hours perfecting the pics in software on his iMac.  It's his only real hobby, and he takes it serious enough to have torn down all the tall trees in our yard and replaced them with shorter ones as as to not limit his field of vision.  Next time I'm home I expect to see quite the different landscape.

Wow well those are some really nice pictures. I had absolutely no idea one could take such pictures from their backyard without working, you know, at NASA or something. This is a revelation :O

I love space! Beautiful shots!

It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.

I went walking in what I call my big backyard today armed with my new phone and took these:

All of these are taken within a 30min walk from my front door, I love New Zealand. Apologies on any border stretch.

Sugar. Short AND sweet.

Ooh nice pics Megz.

I took this in Blarney a few weeks ago, a bit overexposed but not bad for the middle of December. I have the RAW's I'm just too lazy to correct it.

Love that one by the pier Kell.

I'm still learning. I got a Canon t4i after last Thanksgiving and mostly use it for shots of my daughter. Just quick snaps in JPEG usually, but then I try to shoot RAW when I'm going for something specific. I'd shoot L+RAW all the time, but it fills up the 16GB SD card pretty quick and I'm not always vigiliant about clearning it out. After screwing around in Program and Aperature modes a lot when I first got it, I'm now concentrating on Shutter Speed.

Still learning Lightroom.

Here's a couple snaps. The 2nd one I did for a contest where the subject was "glass".

Thanks Amer! And absolutely love the one with your daughter. Good stuff man!

for what it's worth - I shoot RAW 98% of the time, and just pick and choose later. I could probably shoot jpg too, but I don't.

Also, Amer, what lens are you using? The kit one that came with the camera?

The picture with my daughter is the nifty fifty - EF 50mm 1.8 Canon lens that is about $110 or so depending on where you go. We went out to a farm that day that is a public park and I decided I was only going to use the 50mm. Crop sensor factor is nuts though with the t4i. All day I had to stand probably 7 to 10 feet away from her to get relatively close up shots. It's a pain in a public place with tons of people when you're trying to get some tight shots. I like how it turned out after editing the RAW in lightroom, it has some more pop than the jpeg right out of the camera. It drives me nuts though b/c depending what monitor I'm veiwing it on it can look over exposed (at home) or the white balance looks off (at work). But it's a nice fast lens. That shot was taken inside a barn with no flash.

The 2nd picture was taken with the newish EF-S 18-135mm 3.5-5.6 STM stepping motor lens that was one of the kit lens options with the t4i. It's got a quiet focusing motor for use when you're doing video...which I've done all of once with the camera. The 2nd shot was actually taken through the glass of our china cabinet, so I don't know how much of a judge it should really be, but I was happy with it. It's a very versatile lens and I leave it on 98% of the time, only really using the 50mm if I'm going for a portrait or want that wide open aperature. I feel like I can get bokeh just as good with it as the 50. Standalone, the thing goes for like $550 or about, which I think is what you can get the whole t4i basic kit with the basic 18-55mm lens these days. I'm kind of sad that if I ever go full frame I'll have to leave this lens behind. But if I have that much money to burn I can afford a full frame zoom lens I guess.

The main reason I shoot JPEG is b/c my wife is usually the one who manages the pictures and takes them off the card and uploads them to our shutterfly account. I just don't want to put an extra step in there for her.
