Crono can cross dimensions too!

Or if you just completely ignore it's story.  I'm fairly certain I didn't read 2/3 of the text but the gameplay was just as fun as the first two games to me.

Spidey, did you finish Black Sigil?  I was so sure I'd love that game but the stupid high encounter rate got to me everytime I picked it up.  I made it about 20% through the game before I put it down for 2 years, then got another 10% under my belt and quit again... such a nostalgic looking game but I couldn't take it.

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

I got about 20  hours in, at a pretty fast pace. I need to get back to finish it, I love the game but just never got around to it. T
I'm fairly certain here's a cheat to modify the encounter rate, you should look into that, it made the game a dream to play ;) Maybe I"m thinking of the wrong game but I'll double check, I'm certain I used one.

As for Heroes of Light, I stand by what I said, I guess to each their own. Just letting him know it's the worst RPG I played on the DS and warning him you can't use a full party until three fourths through the entire game.

I didn't like the gameplay in covenant of the plume either, thought it was too limiting for a strategy rpg.  I'm not one too complain about ruining VP story's, I loved VP2 a ton including its story.

There was an encounter rate modifier code.  I used it the last time I played but at that point I had lost interest and kinda forgot where to go and had bigger better games to play.

Heroes of Light: I'm completely on Spidey's side.  What an awful no good horrible very bad game.  And I TRIED to love it.

Ok, I will agree with you about FF:HoL and the whole "no full party" thing, but for me, that ended up being only a minor problem. The story clips along quickly enough, and it's not like at any given time you have only one character for very long. I liked the way the story developed by going back and forth between the main characters until they finally meet. My only beef was that there was a problem with lvl balance by the time they actually got together.

Yeah that's not really the main beef I have with the game, it is tolerable, I was more using it as an example as to why it's not old school. This whole "your party constantly breaking up and never filling up all the slots" is a completely new thing, and growing to be one of my biggest j-RPG pet peeves. FF6 had your party break up a lot but you'd always still get 4 characters to use.

The King's orders are absolute

All the DS RPGs I've played and liked have already been mentioned. If you can find them, I'd recommend the GBA versions of FFV and FFVI. FFV Advance is the best version of the game with a far better translation and without the load times of the PSone port. FFVI Advance has a far more accurate translation though it does keep in the names Woosley gave for the playable characters (Terra is still Terra, instead of Tina, for example). FFVI Advance's audio was downgraded for the GBA unfortunately. FFI, II, and IV are also available for the GBA, though you can also get them for PSP (and just about anything else at this point).

Let's Play Chrono Trigger
Let's Play The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past
Let's Play Final Fantasy VI

That goes back to FF2 and especially 4, actually. Cecil was the only constant.

And in FFIV, 4 different party members died permanently.

So yeah maybe the whole "break-up/regroup" thing was a tad annoying, it can make things more challenging if you're working with half a party at any given time. And since today's gamers who experienced the old school games complain about how today's games are too easy...

Well, anyway.

Winter Knight of the Unseelie Court

From how I've been playing it, it looks like I can add Devil Survivor 2 to the list of essential DS RPGs.

Yep, still gaming

Another vote for Revenant Wings, even if you didn't care so much for FFXII, it's still a lot of fun.

You still had a full party of 4-5 members in FF4 though. I'm not referring to party members changing, I'm talking about being forced to play through most of a game with just one or two party members. You just can't assemble much strategy with only two characters in turn based games. you get one healer and one attacker
