FF13's world wasn't just linear. It was barren.

FFX is a great example of a subtly linear world due to tech limitations, yet it comes off organic and full of life. Not to mention filled with nooks and crannies for exploration within the small scope.

I have no problem with linear if the storyline is really good. Usually a game is made linear because the storyline forces it. And I can accept it in order to enjoy the story and let them do what they want to do. Because I didn't like the story, the linearity pissed me off.
