Speaking of lost source codes, I hear they lost the original code for Kingdom Hearts as well.

They lost the artwork and textures for Kingdom Hearts, but they had the source code I think. Which probably worked out for them I guess.

I still dont get how they lose it even if there is a 5 year policy? Maybe i'm just ignorant on how this stuff is retained "Hey dude, time to delete old source code files. FF7 original source code? Oh yeah, its older than 5 years, so just go ahead and delete it" ??

Well I think a lot of it has to do with how businesses like this developed. Version control is often left by the way side in earlier incarnations, because there will be a final version and no more. It's much like writing a paper for a course. You don't particularly control your versions because everyone involved is usually awaree of what the latest one is, and then the project is done. Or at least in the old console model was.

Add to that the idea that no one was really even considering game remakes at that point as a general rule. The market had no need for them because there wasn't enough dust and nostolgia on anything for anyone to be ready for one. Then on top of that there is literally data atrophy. No storage medium is perfect, especially when you consider the possiblity of physical loss. Think about what happens to an empty house no one goes and takes a look at periodicially.

Totally poor thinking and planning on that, but it mirrors the early film industry and especially the television industry. Many films are totally lost and of modern importance and note is the number of Dr. Who episodes lost in the original run. 106 of the 253 episodes in the original run are missing and that's after many discoveries of rare material.

Either way, its' utterly assinine on their part. They couldn't have known what big hit it would be, but they had to know it was important to have.

So I was pointed to some of the HD mods for FF7. I'm going to have to acquire a pc version of the game.  I want to play it in HD. >.>
