Reading FFIX out loud with my kids.

I've read the entire first disc of FF7 to them, leaving them the rest to finish themselves one day. I acted out each part myself.

Now we're doing FFIX and I'm having my daughter (7 years) act out Garnet/Dagger, Freya, and Eiko while my son (9 years) act out Vivi, Quina, and Armarant. I'm doing Zidane (my normal voice), Stiener (with a similar voice to Joe from Family Guy), as well as the rest of the npcs. This so far has been really fun and is good reading out loud practice for them. I'm planning on doing the entire game; so far we're at Fossil Roo on Disc 2.

Out of all the video games in the world I want them to be nostalgic about experiencing the grand adventure of FFIX with their father.

So Sigh Ety

Are you reading a script you printed out or reading out loud to the game as you play along and they see the images of what is happening?

Can you be my dad?

Holy shit, I just replayed FF9 with a buddy, and we both read the characters out loud. He did Steiner as Puddy from Seinfeld, aka Patrick Warburton, aka Joe from Family Guy. What a weird coincidence.

The King's orders are absolute

When I would play Super Paper Mario with my niece I would read the dialogue as all the different characters, each with their own voices. Usually when we play with her Mario dolls, I would often end up being Count Bleck.

I also did this sort of thing in my Let's Plays of Final Fantasy V and IV (and will do it with VI once I start that one). I also read the dialogue outloud for Super Mario RPG and I'd say that was the most fun of the games I verbally acted out for an LP. I wound up giving Mallow the Peter Griffin laugh when he does his laughing animation, it just kinda happened.

Let's Play Chrono Trigger
Let's Play The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past
Let's Play Final Fantasy VI

I'm playing the game and teaching them how elements work as well as basic status effects.

Can you be my dad?

I know right, I wish my parents were into video games. I can't even get my friends to play the FF series.

That voice just fits! The Ogloop version of Cid is also fun

I was wondering if anyone was going to do a Let's Play with acting out the parts.

Shortening His Posts

As a soon-to-be father I have wondered how to pass on the (mandatory) love of certain games, and this is inspirational.  So thanks =)  FFIX is cool because they can be a bit younger for it too.  I was always worried that by the time the kids would be old enough to appreciate the games they would be turned off by the graphics.

What do you guys during battles?  Does everyone take turns?  Are there controversies over spending gil?

I use the controls for two reasons: 1) So we can get through as much story as possible in the 1-2 hours a night we have to play and 2) I have a no video games on school nights rule. I am taking the time to explain the mechanics and how to stock up on supplies. FFIX allows two players so on the weekends I let them take turns playing two of the characters during battles.

So we finished the game at 90 hours. Most sidequests were finished, no Ozma though.

Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
I didn't realize the first time I played that Vivi died. I was pretty upset about it this go around. After all these years loving the character I realized he dies at the end. After this realization I started to wonder if the text from each character in the end was speaking about/to Vivi instead of Zidane... since Vivi was the only one that passed away.

EDIT Oh just got my clarification from the wikia:

Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
The monologue during the ending is spoken by Vivi, indicating he has expired by the time the ending takes place, as he is saying goodbye to his friends and the final words of his monologue are "Farewell. My memories will be part of the sky", an allusion to death in the world of Final Fantasy IX. Because the speaker of the lines is not specified it has incited speculation among fans on Vivi's fate and who is the speaker of the monologue. The game's Japanese version is more explicit on the issue, as the speaker uses a speech pattern and pronouns that only Vivi used throughout the game.

^I replayed the game about 6 moths ago, I never knew about this, still didn't until I read that.  How on earth did I miss that?

I think it's pretty subtle. The first few times I played through, I assumed it was Dagger.

The first time I played it, I couldn't tell if it was Zidane, Dagger, or Vivi speaking. Later on I realized Vivi made the most sense, particularly the last lines.

Well I had no clue, must have played in half a dozen times at least by now and it never occured to me, just assumed it was Zidane.
