The problem with a five point scale is getting people to stick to it, and not using fractions to turn it back into a ten point (or more) system.

RPGamer also has multiple reviews for the same game sometimes, because they have different people review the game. That's always nice too.

Aside from the fact that it broke the rating scale, the score and review matched up pretty well.  The review itself was well written, though short, describing both the good and bad points.

So, what I'm saying is, I don't understand what your complaint is about this particular review.

There was an Evony ad when I went there. Crime Enough.

I was listening to Invisible Walls at Gametrailers this morning and all of this discussion hit home again when they started talking about Ratchet and Clank. The game was given a 7.1 and one of the guys on the show (I forget his name, the host, but it wasn't the game reviewer himself who outright bashed the game and its many flaws) actually said they were discouraging people from buying the game. And the game was given a 7.1.

I usually trust Destructoid's reviews. They're often decried for giving low scores, but from my perspective, they're actually using the whole 1-10 scale instead of artificially squeezing everything into the 7-10 range.

Speaking of Destructoid (and Ratchet and Clank), this is a pretty interesting read about how Insomniac Games responded to Destructoid's 4/10 score with respect, only a few weeks after Cliff Bleszinski bitched about the "hateful" 8/10 they gave Gears of War 3. http://www.destructoid.com/insomniac-responds-to-4-10-all-4-one-review-with-dignity-214151.phtml

I guess 7.0 is the new bad :P

No wonder FFXIII was considered a "most dissapointing" nominee even though they gave it 8.8 or 8.9 (which rounded off will be a 9.0 ... which most GOYT nominees got).

I guess that's another reason Destructoid is one of the better sites. They rated FFXIII below average like it deserves. (Actually I think a 4.0 is still too generous for that game.)

I've never seen a single reviewer with whom I agreed about every game they reviewed. There is no system that works for everyone, especially not a numbers system since everyone is affected differently by different aspects of a game.

Best way is to watch gameplay videos IMO.

I find all three of the big three game blogs (Destructoid, Kotaku, and Joystiq) really obnoxious, though I like Kotaku's review format of not assigning scores, but separating things into "Love/Hate."

Joystiq is probably the least offensive overall (though still really bad and their reviews are easily the worst of the three), while Destructoid is like everything awful about Kotaku magnified by 10, except they do have a better layout.

I wonder who'd win in a doucheoff between Tim Rogers and Jim Sterling, though. Because they're two of the biggest douches in game writing, easily.

The jackasses who write for PlayStation Magazine are way douchier than any of the blog reviewers. And unlike them, at least Sterling knows what he's talking about.

I tend to avoid legimate review sites. I only really watch Yahtzee for his comical reviews and a Mixture of Sage Reviews and Angry Joe reviews from the TGWTG/blistered thumbs website for actual reviews.

Wow people are going berserk with Eurogamer's Uncharted 3 review http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-10-21-uncharted-3-drakes-deception-review which further supports my point that gamers are spoiled with infalated scores because the gaming publications have been happy to support them for the last 14 years.

Which is strange cuz the review actually makes a valid point and to the entire Uncharted series as a whole.

It's sad to think we are in a point that the status quo of review scores has come to this: http://i.imgur.com/dh509.png

Edit: What's hilarious though is that Uncharted 2 is probably my 10th Favoriate Game this Generation so far and, if were to use a 10 point scale which I dont, I would probably give it an 8/10 also :P ... I guess if I was a game reviewer a mob would probably beaten me alive by now for not giving high enough scores ( I don't think I would have given a 10 in any game this Gen).
