If they were picketing because Gravity was robbed then I fully support them.

Best Original Screenplay: David O. Russel's been on such a streak that he has to eventually win something, and I think he'll get his chance here. Her would be a great pick but I don't see it for something this aggressively arty.

I like being wrong!

Really deserving list of winners tonight, pretty much nothing I would begrudge.

--12 Years a Slave is the first Best Picture winner with a black director, and Alfonso Cuaron is the first Latino and second non-white Best Director winner. Four years after Kathryn Bigelow the Academy is slowly, grudgingly moving into the 21st century. Not that there won't be a whole lot of King's Speeches in the future, but let's take it where we can get it.

--After leading the pack in nominees American Hustle was completely shut out, which I'm sure some people will be happy about.

--Gravity is the second 3D film in a row to win Best Director. I can only imagine the intense mix of pride and envy James Cameron must be feeling. Avatar 2 has gotta be extra-insane now.

--Wooderson from Dazed and Confused, Jordan Catalano from My So-Called Life, and the director of the Beastie Boys "Sabotage" video. The '90s have come full circle.

I was pretty happy with all the results last night. Frozen winning this year totally makes up for the Wreck-It Ralph snub last year.

A bit but I still like her performance. I thought she was the right person to sing Let it Go and I wasn't dissapointed. Though the presentation on stage could have been better.

For the record I am still calming down from the Gravity loss. I just can't imagine why or how (actually I do) but I really wanted Gravity to be the first sci-fi film to win.

Gravity was a tech demo and nothing more. 12 Years A Slave not only deserved its win on film merits, but it was important from a societal standpoint that it win.

I understand that there are people that do not like Gravity but I would not describe it as a tech demo. It was a real film a suspense/thriller in the backdrop of space. Should it be hailed for its technical achievemnts? Yes but does it get in to the way about thrilling story of surivial in a lifeless environment? For me no. I loved looking at the movie but I was also curious what was going to happen next.

If Gravity won Best Picture, I would be seriously disappointed. I'm so glad they didn't.

I honestly think that Gravity did not deserve to win Best Picture like all my mates who thinks so. I actually find Gravity really annoying and hate the fact that the lead could not calm the hell down and think for a second instead of freaking out the entire movie.

To be fair, she did calm down at the end and reached her goal, but her journey was so painful to watch. However, they did deserve to win for their achievements in visual effects and sound. It just wasn't a good movie overall in my opinion.

Tech demo is perfect.  It was utterly devoid of soul when it came to plot/characters IMO.  Louis CK did an amazing couple of minutes about this film and its absurd premise of a "reluctant astronaut" when he was on Opie and Anthony recently.

edit; which is here if anyone cares.

I know how they work

I'm pretty happy with how things went.  I felt bad for Adele Dazeem though.  I love her, and I think that moron Travolta threw her off a little bit.

I was ECSTATIC that Spike Jonez won best original screenplay.  He definitely deserved it.

And while I understand why 12 Years a Slave won, I was hoping Gravity would.  My real choice of all the nominees was The Wolf of Wall Street, but it had no chance so I decided on Gravity.  Overall I found it to be more impressive than 12 Years, and I was also disappointed in 12 Years itself.  After reading all these people saying how incredible it was, I found it to be a bit mundane.  Plus, it handled the passage of time horribly.  By the end of the film I felt like only a couple months had passed for Solomon instead of twelve years.

I'm not broken up or anything since it's by no means a bad movie, but I didn't find it to be as awesome as a lot of other people did.

I would be doing the same thing too if I was about to be stranted and drift in space forever

I had the same feeling myself

My preference of the BP nominees would actually be
1. Gravity
2. Her
3. Wolf of Wall Street
4. 12 Years a Slave
5. American Hustle
6. Nebraska
7. Captain Phillips
8. Philomena
9. Dallas Buyers Club

Though between my #3 and #4 is a pretty big gap in how I feel about the movie

I was actually quite pleased that Gravity did not win BP.  I personally thought 12 Years a Slave and Dallas Buyer's Club were both better and more deserving, as well as possibly American Hustle (though I didn't think it would have a chance above the previously mentioned two).  I haven't seen every nominee yet, so I may feel there others that deserved the honor more once I have.  I do think that Gravity deserved the numerous awareds it received for technical achievement, but honestly I had a huge issue with the scientific aspects of the film and couldn't get over them while watching it.  For sheer entertainment value it was worthy, but it is difficult for me to want to award Best Picture to a movie that doesn't feel authentic to me.  I thought the movie was far better technically and better acted than it was scripted, primarily because scientifically it was quite flawed.  I just couldn't get past that.

That being said, I thought that they picked the right person for best director, because even though I don't think the movie was well-done enough from a scripting/believability sense, I think that type of movie is extremely difficult to direct, and I thought he did a wonderful job.

I don't consider myself a movie buff or even close to a novice film critic, just someone who likes both good movies and entertaining movies (which aren't necessarily good).  To me Gravity was very good, but it just wasn't BP.

My only hope for any given Best Picture is that it's not a movie that's actively awful (Crash) or well-made but bland and culturally irrelevant (Slumdog Millionaire, The Artist). None of the frontrunners, or any of the nominees that I've seen, fit those categories, so I wouldn't have been unhappy with any result. This was a good year for movies and the Academy ultimately did a solid job in recognizing that.

My personal nominee rankings:
1.The Wolf of Wall Street
2. Nebraksa
3. Her
4. Dallas Buyers Club
5. 12 Years a Slave
6. Gravity
7. American Hustle
8. Didn't catch Captain Philips
9. lol I'm never watching Philomena

And my overall top ten of the year because why not:

10. Gimme the Loot
9. Her
8. Frances Ha
7. Spring Breakers
6. Only God Forgives
5. Nebraksa
4. The Past
3. Short Term 12
2. Stories We Tell
1. The Wolf of Wall Street

Aw, Philomena isn't bad.  A bit sappy, but that's to be expected.

Guess I'll do my Best Picture ranking as well.

1. The Wolf of Wall Street
2. Nebraska
3. Gravity
4. Dallas Buyers Club
5. Her
6. 12 Years a Slave
7. Philomena
8. American Hustle
9. Captain Phillips

That isn't to say Captain Phillips is bad, mind you.  I just didn't think it was anything special.
