FFVII. Its characters are some of my absolute faves of the entire franchise (although the compilation is making them a joke of their former selves).

9 I just couldn't get into. Never replayed and don't care to.

Fuuko Sakurada
Momoia =D

FF7 used to be my favorite, but it got so overabused that my favorite on this system is now FF8 ...now, maybe it'll be my favorite once again if they make a nice remake or something, I don't know =]

7 has moments that are the definition of awesome, but at the same time it also takes dips. Wall Market, the huge materia quest...it's uneven. For that reason I go with 8. It may not have reached some of 7's heights, but it was consistent.

Crono
Crono can cross dimensions too!

If you know what you are doing the Wall Market is awesome. Sure on a first run it might take you HOURS but after that who doesn't love Cloud in a dress? Huge materia is a dip? Seriously? Stopping crazy trains (lol), Fort Condor battles, underwater Junon? Did we play the same game?

To each his own, I just happen to love those points.

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

Yes, what of it?

I'm thinking about giving VIII another try to be honest. I just hated the battle system. But there is one thing I love about that game....

I'd vote VII. VIII is a pretty close second.

I'm replaying IX now, and even ~11 years later, it's a still an extremely distant third for me (which is interesting, since a lot of you ranked IX first).

Here's my two cents. I appreciate IX primarily for two reasons: great visual design and whimsicality. It's a great RPG, judged by itself. But compared to VII and VIII, everything else seems so bland to me. Except maybe Vivi, none of the cast is memorable. If you asked me to start listing Final Fantasy characters off the top of my head, I'm not sure I'd even recall any from IX unless I'd played it recently. Kuja is a profoundly generic villain even by FF standards. The materia and junction systems offered great customization and encouraged experimentation. With IX, you...equip a piece of gear. I guess there's a degree of strategy from allocating AP, but there's usually enough for everything useful anyway. The story, while far less convoluted than VII or VIII, is also far less interesting. Most of the second disc is backtracking (Conde Petie to Black Magic Village...back to CP. Madain Sari to Iifa Tree, back to MS, back to Iifa Tree).

But as Crono said, to each his/her own. ;)

I've actually never been able to choose between VIII and IX for my favorite on PS1. (FFVII is a little too disjointed to take the top spot. Also, lego people.) I love the Junction system, characters (Quistis = yes) and set pieces from VIII, and the story, locations, and music from IX.

It's VII for me, despite how uncool I'm sure that makes me seem. One day, I tell ya, it'll loop back around to being cool again.

And then you can say "I liked FF7 before it was cool to like it!" and bask in your hipster gamer glory.

(I like VII too! I just like other games more. We can be uncool together.)

VII>IX>VIII, but the difference between them is like their scores being 97%, 98% and 99%. They're all excellent games.

Although thinking about it FFVIII is pretty broken. So easy to game that game.

EDIT: Fixed the paradox. :P

All of them! The best thing about the PSX titles was: they were all amazing! To such extent that which ever I'm playing at the moment or thinking about becomes my favorite. To me (Disclaimer: Opinion) Final Fantasy was 7-9 and it ended there. Been hoping for a game to take me on a trip like those, none has thus far. Final Fantasy needs Hironobu Sakaguchi.... SquareEnix if you want to fucking give us fan service, don't remake a game. Make a new game and let Sakaguchi head it. That would be the only fan service worth doing.

I'll go ahead and throw myself into the minority of VIII fandom.

I absolutely loved the overall atmosphere of the entire game. The overlapping of the stories of Squall/Laguna was both poignant and tragic and made for an overall solid tale, despite some of the weaker(orphanage/SquallxRinoa love story)areas of the story. Even those weaker areas of it never disrailed the the entirety of VIII's storyline on the whole for me. Overall I enjoyed most of the regular and supporting cast and found most of them memorable.

Best soundtrack of the three PSX games by far.

I actually like the junction system because once you know how to poperly abuse it, it makes for breezy playthroughs. As I've gotten older, I just don't have the kind of time I used to for playing videogames. If I'm simply replaying through a game I've already beaten, I want to get through as quickly as possible. VIII's system allows for that more readily than the other two.

IMO best of the PSX era and the one I replay the most.

This. I love all three all most equally really, but VII will still hold the torch for me.
