I saw some complaining about The Artist winning Best Picture; one person going as far as to call it Oscar Bait.

Yeah, I didn't see many movies last year (and none of the ones that got a Best Picture nom) but I can still say with confidence that Drive got snubbed.

Wait, what?

There's a large, vocal constituency that feels that the Academy is making a safe, unremarkable, unadventurous choice in awarding a French black-and-white independent silent film with no stars.

Basically people will complain about fucking anything

The Help was the safe Oscar bait, and the Academy didn't bite.

Drive sounds like the sort of movie that's supposed to be really good, that even looks good in trailers, but that I end up not liking. But there's only one way to find out.

Everything I heard about The Help before the Oscar noms were announced was that it's a somewhat decent film, but glances over its racial themes too lightly to be taken seriously as a drama. So I was pretty surprised that it was even nominated at all. Oh wait, no I'm not. Easy answers are the Academy's forte.

It was nominated in only one non-acting category which was Best Picture ... so it's not like it was demolished like Gangs of New York in Oscar night or anything.

Yay frenchies. .. although not really surprising. I'm glad Dujardin won, I've always been fond of him. It's funny cause 15 years ago he was in a silly parodic boyband, then became a huge star with this silly remake of a quebecan (of all things...) sitcom.. I don't think anyone would've thought back then that he would go on to win an oscar. Ti's pretty cool though, he's a great actor.

On a related note, our Minister of Culture just issued an official statement saying that The Artist winning the oscar was validation for the recent anti-piracy laws and brigade that've been implemented here. ... wat ?

Hey, it makes perfect sense if you don't require any kind of logic or connection between Best Picture and anti-piracy.

HALE YEAH

Tumblr was complaining about who got best makeup.

I shit you not, The Iron Lady was hands down the best use of makeup I have ever seen in a film. I legit thought that Meryl Streep was a different person when the movie started. Yeah, fantasy makeup is interesting and all that, but The Iron Lady was better because it felt more real than I'd ever expect it to be.
