Fuck Shit Stack.

I'm surprised no one is talking about this here yet.

Basically bad news and the end of the internet a we know it if this were to pass. Although Obama has come out in favor of net neutrality, so it would seem that he would most likely veto a bill like this that would censor the internet.

I've seen it discussed on other forums.  It may seem overly optimistic of me, but I have faith.  Not that I respect Congress, but I have faith in humanity that this will not pass.  So I just don't worry about it.

But if you do, here's what another forum posted:

here's the actual bill:
http://leahy.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/BillText-PROTECTIPAct.pdf

and some good articles/sites:
http://act.demandprogress.org/sign/protectip_docs
http://www.brookings.edu/papers/2011/1115_cybersecurity_friedman.aspx
http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20110510/13285714230/son-coica-protect-ip-act-will-allow-broad-censorship-powers-including-copyright-holders.shtml
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1111/67985.html
http://www.forbes.com/sites/ciocentral/2011/11/11/the-case-for-the-protect-ip-act-and-dns-filtering/

those have some great explanations and viewpoints from relevant people. if i remember correctly, the last article is written by a proponent. good to have other viewpoints too, even if theyre wrong =]

EDIT: OH! I forgot the three most important things... this is a series about these new legislations (sopa included) everyone who wants to learn more should read these:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2011/10/disastrous-ip-legislation-back-%E2%80%93-and-it%E2%80%99s-worse-ever
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2011/10/sopa-hollywood-finally-gets-chance-break-internet
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2011/11/hollywood-new-war-on-software-freedom-and-internet-innovation

EDIT 2: Here's another link to an interesting read about another legislation/enforcement debacle.. its still going on and will only get worse with PIPA and SOPA
https://www.eff.org/wp/unintended-consequences-under-dmca

If you wanna be involved:

https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml

Mention "PROTECT IP (S. 968)/SOPA (HR. 3261)"

But seeing as this allows basically any forum to be shut down for any reason, I know it won't pass.  I just have confidence.

It's the vague wording.  Basically, it gives corporations the right to sue the owners of the websites (youtube, Facebook, Twitter) for almost any reason.  Basically, it makes these sites liable, and turns it into a form of censorship.

To put it in persective;  You know how a lot of things can be posted due to the free use act?  Well, this bill pretty much drop kicks it out of the arena and gives corporations the right to sue these people, even if it's a random song playing in the background that has nothing to do with the video.

So for the next election can we just vote for our favorite corporation instead of politician because all I can pretty much see is corporations controlling everything from this point on.

No answer, must be that deaf bitch.

This bill would just set a bad precedent.

If they would actually stop and try to find out the reason that people pirate things, and fix that, maybe it wouldn't be so rampant.

The bill is pretty much dead in the water. A number of congressmen on both sides of the aisles are really railing against this, and it's also extremely unpopular among the American people. I'll be surprised if it even passes the House. It sure as hell isn't going to pass the Senate, and Obama will definitely veto it.

Didn't Obama actually threaten to veto the bill if it ever made it to him?  Or am I thinking a different, yet similar bill?

Similar one, though this is a far more extreme version of that bill. Obama's been reliably pro-net neutrality, at least. He'd be guaranteed to veto any sort of bill like this.

Crono can cross dimensions too!

Apple, MS, and Nintendo are all for SOPA.  Surpised?  I seriously doubt this will pass so I'm not too worried.

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

Piracy does need to be dealt with, but the more draconian the big media companies are, the less support they're going to get from the man on the street. It could easily bite them.

That's exactly it. Piracy is just about impossible to stop with laws and legislation. All these measures do is completely screw over the typical internet user.

Pirates will always pirate, but these companies shouldn't be creating or advocating things that only result in legitimate customers becoming them.
