So we'll eb getting Ifrit and Shiva earlier than in the original game. This does leave potential for additional summons that weren't in the game. I wouldn't mind Bahamut Sin being one, even Garuda, Bismark, and a few others from past FF games.

RE: summons, we're definetely getting new Summon spells in this, as one is already confirmed as bonus DLC included with the Deluxe/First Class Collector's Editions (Cactuar), so I wonder if the legendary dummied-out Summons that were meant to be in the original PS1 version will also finally appear (Carbuncle and Golem). As for a new Bahamut, I'd love to see EXA Bahamut from Crisis Core appear as that was just so over the top (it blows a hole in the moon for crying out loud!). :p

Also, I noticed Aeris's outfit has been altered - her dress is more looser and has a frilly lace hem - considering CC depicted her outfit at the time of FFVII's beginning more or less the same as in FFVII and AC, why did they now change it? Tifa's outfit also seems to have changed (she now has a black sport's bra underneath her top and her skirt inexplicably has a box pleat on the front - seen during the 'push up' minigame scene in the trailer if you look closely). These outfit alterations make no sense as they clash with the existing Compilation titles, let alone the original game's depiction. But maybe I'm just being too nitpicky. :p

The voice actors don't worry me too much, but that might be me just not having too high standards for SE voice acting (given how awful voice acting in things like FFXIV and XV have been ;)).

Look I know I'm a cynical fuck but...that voice acting really doesn't sound like ass to anyone else?  It's 2019 and this sounds at best on par with FFX.

Oh yeah, it's absolutely fucking awful, but that's nothing new with Square.

I made this for you!

Fuck Shit Stack.

I hope it comes with an option for the original japanese voice cast like I had to do with FF15.

New official trailer is up....

Apart from the zig-zagging vocal cast (some are atrocious like 'young Cloud', but some strangely fitting like Palmer of all people), I have to admit, this looks good. And there is clearly much story expansion of many of the background Shinra executive cast such as Hojo apparently keeping tabs on Cloud from afar.

They've also cleaned up the infamously sloppy translation from the PS1 version, silly thingsfrom the original like Heidegger's "flush your personal problems" line to Reeve make far better sense now. I just hope Aeris's famously bad "this guy are sick" line.. is still in there (as it was so bad it was good, and to remove it would be sacriliage - it's even referenced/parodied in FFXIV!).

Wall Market/Honeybee Inn also 100% confirmed (I can practically hear Cloud's uncomfortable groaning as he gets around Wall Market in that dress! :p).

And Scarlet is also confirmed to be a sadistic dominatrix. (well we knew she was anyway in the original, but the remake takes that idea and runs with it). :P

New Uematsu-composed theme song too (probably for just this episode... not bad but not one of his better ones.. but then he's still recovering from illness so he's probably not yet at his full potential).

Either way.... I am dropping the cynicism... I want this and can't wait for it.

(EDIT: had to post the video as a link as the embeded player link function for the forum seems to be now broken).

It looks good although I wish they didn't show off everything and kept it more minimal in presentation. Just so we could be surprised later on. Yeah the English cast is bad. They better have an option to switch to Japanese.

I mean... it's not like we don't know what is going to happen. I do agree they went a little overboard on showing almost everyone, including Jenova Birth (if that is the form we are fighting). I am reminded of John Carpenters The Thing when I look at Jenova in this game.

One thing about the Jenova fight that ahs dawned on me. What if the fight here is Jenova Birth and the second one on the ship is Jenova Life? Perhaps we don't get a Jenova fight at the City of the Ancients right after THAT part.

Some of the cast changes are okay. Wedge was the biggest improvement in the previous trailer. Red XIII is almost perfect. I just wish they put a little beastial sound to his voice. I'm thinking something like the Kilrathi from Wing Commander. I do wish they had kept the Compilation cast though.

Enkidoh: Likely that line is out since they fixed it in the PC port.

I am hoping they expand further on Scarlett and Heidegger in the future games. I want to hate those two so much that defeating Proud Clad will be satisfying.

Those little anime gasps and grunts are fucking insufferable.  I wondered if my cynicism would subside nearer the time, but...meh, still doesn't look great.

I took a crack at it and enjoyed everything but the awful voice acting. You're right about the gasps and grunts. They're completely unnecessary. And the voice actor for Barret sounds like a black guy trying too hard to be a black guy. It's weird.

Those flaws asides, the graphics are great, the battle system works, the music is good, and it's pretty faithful to the original.

I might actually buy a Final Fantasy game for the first time in 20 years.

Played the demo last night - and I agree Dh, even the battle system which is so clearly still taking cues from stupid FFXIII with the whole staggering thing, it all just works. Even the dialogue changes work for the better, although I thought Barret's VA wasn't too bad, I kinda miss Beau Bilingsley's take on him. Wedge sounds though... well.... a lot better than that early trailer, I guess his groin/throat injury must have healed. ;) But he's still meh.

Really the only low point I saw
Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
was a change to the plot - specifically the result of the Bombing Mission. Yes, the reactor still blows up causing mass casulties and destruction to the surrounding areas of Midgar, but it's the circumstances that SE has altered from the original that left me scratching my head: in the original FFVII the enormous explosion of the number 1 reactor was actually narrative wise a mistake: Barret's goal wasn't to destroy the reactor completely but simply damage it enough to disable it. Jessie screwed up the bomb's design and made it too powerful (this is why back at AVALANCHE HQ she even stated that she made a miscalculation). It's also why the second bombing mission against the number 5 reactor didn't have the same result - the bomb worked as it was meant to.

However, here in the demo (and presumedly in the final release version) of the remake, the bomb merely damages the reactor core but doesn't destroy it; it's actually the Shinra themselves that blow up the reactor (Heidegger specifically, under President Shinra's orders, remotely programs Shinra's security bots to start blasting away at the reactor core after AVALANCHE have aleady escaped), presumedly to false flag AVALANCHE as actual terrorists rather than just environmental activists (yes I know that line is blurry anyway). SE, we know Heidegger and President Shinra are evil, and the Shinra company is 'Evil Inc', but come on! SE may as well have stamped the word "ARSEHOLE" on Heidegger and President Shinra's foreheads.

Regardless, the demo was fun and I chuckled at the little references to the Compilation in the backgrounds (Sector 1 Station has adverts on the walls for Banora White apple juice from Crisis Core and President Shinra references the original AVALANCHE's assasination attempts on him in Before Crisis), so I can't wait to see what else will be in the full release. So SE have left me wanting more... :D

Damnit SE, you can't do this.. get me hooked and then leave me hanging! :P

P.S. And geez

SE are hardly being subtle about Jessie's infatuation with Cloud...

I also disliked the Tifa changes. Why?

UsGamer is hinting that the first part of the game will end upon leaving Midgar.

So will SE only reference the compilation bits? I only played VII and watched the movie.

I've been looking down my nose at this remake all along, treating it like one of those awful live-action Disney remakes.  But playing this demo had me grinning like an idiot the entire time.  The music, the world design, etc.  Somehow they're getting this right.

Jessie never outright said she screwed up, she said she followed the plans she got off a computer, but both original and remake the damage is more than AVALANCHE expected, so maybe it was hinted at back then. Who knows with that fucking mess of a localisation?

Demo was fairly solid. Battle system is pretty involved, more than "press square to win", and they've remembered that Cloud is an absolute dork. Might turn out alright in the end.

So, completely unexpectedly, SE released the physical editions (but not the digital version on PSN) to stores in PAL territories (UK/Europe/Australia) today over a week early due to many of these countries being lockdowned due to COVID, and, I managed to get a copy too (I missed out on the Deluxe edition that I thought my sister had preordered as a colleague at her store sold the copy she'd set aside for me behind her back). But I still got the preorder bonus (Chocobo Chick Summon) and settled for the standard version.

And...

I am so amazed... I cannot even fangasm....

but the story additions work (I take back what I said about the demo).

Only up to Sector 7 Slums but I'm just running around just taking in the scenery porn - every scrap of ground of Midgar is rendered in loving detail, which is a dream come true I've been waiting over 25 years for! SE have clearly taken FFXIV as an ideal and designed the Remake with the same drive and passion to first and foremost, be respectful to the fans and the original.

I won't spoil anything, especially for those who can't get it til the 10th, but I will say this, I mean what I said about FFXIV being an inspiration for this - the robes the Sephiroth Clones wear, clearly were pinched from the Ascians in FFXIV... but I'm not bitter about that.

And yes, Cloud's dorkiness is fully intact despite his attempt to be a big badass. ;)

Dying to hear your thoughts when you've finished it.  I daresay this game's gonna prove to be far more controversial than anyone expected.
