That's part of the reason I still feel that FFVII and IX have the best graphics of the series to this day.  The beautiful pre-rendered backgrounds combined with unique viewing angle for every area really never gets old for me.  The 3D games never could capture this imo.

Yea, if anything the technology forced them to focus more on the art.  Yes, everything is beautiful in the modern games, but it's not the same, and you see it all from an identical perspective unless you stop to gaze.  The new games have their own visual charm, for sure, but there's definitely something cool about the PS era pre-rendered backgrounds.

Agreed. There's a nice 5 minute video summary of FFVII here that shows off many pre-rendered backgrounds that I had genuinely forgotten about. I don't think we'll ever get that detail in an RPG again due to the effort required in rendering it in 3D.

EDIT: Dammit now I want to finish my walkthrough of the game.

Eh, I consider the best looking ones to be FFX, FFVI, FFXII, and FFXIII.

Currently playing: Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, Picross DS
Last played: Time Hollow (good)
Last watched: Agent Carter (very good)

What do people think of the Final Fantasy Dimensions fiasco? From what I gather the high price plus the fact that "oldschool" Final Fantasy doesn't cut it these days meant that the game tanked badly sales wise.
It failed in a core element of retro - graphics. Blur has no place in pixel art.

Why exclude FFVIII? Anyway, I agree. Even though the graphics level of FFXIII is stunning, it won't ever match the PS1 FFs for me. Pre-rendered backgrounds simply burst with detail and ambient in a way I don't see 3D being able to.

Pre-rendered backgrounds, like no voices, allowed for more imagination. Nowadays, there's little to no space for imagination, everything is presented as is, with no room to expand it within ourselves.

Oh, I meant all 3 PSX games of course.  I really think the pre-rendered backgrounds are the way to go.  Even FFX had a handful of prerendered areas and I think they were among the better looking parts of the game.

So they release an old school FF for the IOS reminiscent of FFI - V.  But, even though VI is my favourite, I think they need to make a new PSX style FF rpg complete with pre-rendered backgrounds to really rejuvinate the series.  XIII is gorgeous as heck and, even as primarily a PC gamer, it made my jaws drop.  But imagine 1920x1080 pre-rednered backgrounds with FFXIII or better character models.  The unique angles and detail put into each area really make pre-rendered the way to go.

Some PS2-GCN era RPGs still used pre-rendered and they looked very nice, having the benefit of 480 rather than the usual ~240 res for PSX games.

Baten Kaitos Origins, for example (models rendered in 720, background upscaled from 480):

But FFIX still does it best imo.  I am especialy partial toward the South Gate:

Beautiful.

Final Fantasy' X's battle system and sphere grid system was indeed one of the best in the series. It's probably the first time in the FF series that I actually found status aliement speels and time spells to be really useful.

I thought FFX was a great game and it's core design alone could have made it the Best FF ever. Though I guess what brought FFX down is just the narrative, the story was actually very rich but concluded abruptly. Once after you complete Zanarkand I kind of the felt the game rushed the story. Also another problem was the lack of added incentive to explore the game after you finished it we know FFXII has a massive world, FFVII still had a lot to explore (Weapons, KOTR materia, Gold Saucer etc), and FFIX had that treasure hunt like game. I guess scrolling through a world map a tapping "X" isn't just that exciting.

Honestly, as much as I really disliked FFX's characters, story, and so-called world, I definitely enjoyed the battles and the Sphere Grid.

In the end as much as I can't stand X, it's still a million times better than XII.

I'm always blown away by how much flak XII gets.  For me it was a massive improvement on X, and as close as we've had to the PS era games.  Only game I really disliked was XIII.  That said, I did find the battles very engaging in XIII, even if I didn't feel it was appropriate for a FF.

XII was long, tedious, with a horrible battle system, few engaging characters, a tired story, and side quests that were way too hard.

Final fantasy XII is the video game version of Kevin Smiths critique of LoTR saga in Clerks 2.

I'm with the group of people that think FF12 was the best thing since PSX FF's. Only thing that it was missing was a good story.

I would rather eat out Ayn Rand's centipede-laden corpse cooch while a silverback gorilla rapes me up the ass than get within a million yards of ever playing FFXII again.

I enjoyed FFXII for what it gave me. It's just that its presentation was so underwhelming it was totally forgettable. But I don't really hate it as much as half of this forum do, it seems.

Now FFXIII on the other hand...
