Game pet peeves.

I don't mind frequent random encounters, except when they happen right before boss battles.  I like to buff my characters up before I got in for a boss battle, and I don't like a random encounter undoing that.

Rare drops suck.

Games that are so dark that I have to readjust my TV settings get on my nerves.  I don't mind dark games, but I do  mind not being able to distinguish between a wall and a floor and a corner.

Near impossible difficulty sucks.

Shooters that aren't terribly precise.  This happens in arcades a LOT, and even when you figure out where the aiming is off it's hard to readjust.

Random encounters.

Shitty cameras.

Party leader dies = game over.

The whole moe movement that Japanese games are doing.

Nippon Ichi.  Just in general.

Telling you you're low on life by obscuring the screen with a lot of red.  Because clearly if you desperately need to survive, clear vision isn't important.

Motion controls.  Really, everything Nintendo does lately.  But mostly motion controls.

Sandbox games in general.

Preorder bonuses that are different depending on where you preorder them.

DLC that comes with games, but is already on the disc.

Bullshit comeback mechanics in fighting games (Hi, Capcom).

Rare drops.

Arbitrary fetch quests and filler material in the story just to pad a game's length.

Sidequests you can't find without gamefaqs or a guide.

Other stuff I can't remember right now.

Seelas
I want to go back.

Dialogue sequences with characters who have had no effort put into their writing or characterization. I like Skyrim but the dialogue is just so pointless and boring because everyone in the world is a complete noncharacter.

As a counterpart: Cutscenes or dialogue with no sense of composition or camerawork. It's so damn unnerving to have a conversation with some guy and the camera is just staring zoomed-in directly on his face for like two minutes straight.

The Alpha and the Omega

Awesome graphics, crazy-insane texture and detail, but utterly awful facial and mouth animation. I'm looking at you, Heavy Rain.

I made this for you!

Crono
Crono can cross dimensions too!

OH!  DLC in general.  If I pay full price for a game I REALLY don't want to drop anymore to get the full game's experience.  Heaven forbid you buy an FPS like Modern Warfare and don't want to drop an extra 45 bucks on mappacks but then you get kicked out of a group every other battle because they go to a map you didn't buy.

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

Limited Save Spots-We live in a time where systems come with Hard Drives, but some games still only give you 1-3 spots.

Tradition RPG's currently stuck on hand helds.

Cell Phone Games

Closing Down Servers on game thus making some Achievements impossible to get.

The whole concept of save points in general bugs the shit out of me. For fuck's sake, we had the ability to save anywhere in the Lunar games on the PS1, why are games since then still fucking around with this save point bullshit? Really annoying.

Press X to not die. Especially when games like to throw it in during cutscenes.

Broken mechanics. For example, in Halo Reach, Armor Lock is much more powerful/lasts longer than all of the other abilities to choose from. So naturally everyone picks it.

Games that flash the edges of the screen red when you're low on health.

Party leader dies= game over.

Escort missions. Especially if your partner can't defend themselves.

DLC. I didn't even want to pay sixty bucks, but I did, and now you want another $10-15? I don't think so. (To be fair, I can't remember the last time I paid full release price on a game.)

Unskippable cutscenes.

I love you, everything burrito.

Yeah, that limited save points is completely pointless. Some people say "its for the challenge" yet I beat half those games without a single game over because they are so fucks easy anyway, it's just a pain in the ass when I gotta leave or worry about the dog tripping over the chord and freezing the game.

Oh and new game + options that let you carry almost nothing over. What's the point?

Long, unskippable cutscenes right before a difficult boss battle/final boss.

The absolute worst example of this BS was Valkyrie Profile 2, with each NG+ increasing the difficulty exponentially, with nothing carried over, and no bonuses except the ability to have different music in battles. What the fuck is the point of that?

Yup that's one of the worst offenders that I was thinking of! The worst part is that once you lose your new game + save file, you can't start another new game +. I wanted to start up a new file recently and I had to beat the game to earn the new game + right again, only to remember all I get was to listen to the VP1 battle music instead. The funny thing is with the increasing difficulty it would be the PERFECT game to carry your stuff over too.

Yeah, small number of save spots for no reason. I'm playing Zelda now, and for some reason it still limits you to 3 files. Why? Because it's been that way for 25 by god years!!!

In a game being touted for it's innovation, Nintendo was inspired to auto-fill "Link" on the new quest screen, instead of making you type it in.

My biggest pet peeve in gaming right now is mobile games, and how a few of them are making big money, leading industry leaders to think the mobile gaming space is ALL making tons of money, ergo the future is mobile gaming.  Not helping the case are the unwashed masses who lap up 99 cent app games and then thing "Why should I pay $40 for a DS or PSP game when I could get an ap game for 99 cents?" as though the quality was somehow the same.  But maybe it is to them, because they have no standards and app games are actually good enough for them.  I don't want good gaming to go on the wane because society at large is okay with cheap, shitty time-waster games.

Deep Water Horizon

- Visuals slathered in brown/gray/white/gold

- Loli.  I don't have a problem with a fifteen year old Rikku, but some of this stuff is just creepy.

- Unable to skip cutscenes in a game where the story's no good.  Really, the option should always be there.

- Platforming in FPS's.

- In Western RPG's, not knowing what dialogue you're actually choosing before you choose it.  The Old Republic sounds especially bad because you've got the Mass Effect wheel, and if something you choose isn't what you thought it was, you can't reload.

- Limited inventory.  Okay, I get it in a survival game like Resident Evil, but in RPG's like Oblivion, Dragon Age: Origins, Baldur's Gate II...not cool.  KotOR had the right idea.

Currently playing: Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, Picross DS
Last played: Time Hollow (good)
Last watched: Agent Carter (very good)
