This game is rape made manifest and uploaded onto a blu ray disc.

"Of Christ's twelve Apostles Judas alone proved to be traitor. But if he had acquired power, he would have represented the other eleven Apostles as traitors, and also all the lesser Apostles whom Luke numbers as seventy." - Leon Trotsky

I have a blog. This is its URL. You should read it. It's about education and skepticism and books and it has a lot of pictures of Batman and Robin in it: https://baldermoon.wordpress.com/

Is the game awesome and you just happen to die a bunch, or awesome because you die a bunch?

I only died 3 times in the tutorial. I was pretty proud of myself.

Now that I'm out of it, what's the best way to go? Up or down?

Well, Up leads you to many types of enemies that will kill you.

Down leads you to many types of enemies that will kill you.

...

Good question.

Neither. Either up or down is certain death for beginners. It took me three hours to figure that out. You want to go towards the mountains and around them, to an ascending stair case. This will take you to Blight Town.

So I'm not suppose to go through that castle like place?

You are supposed to go through the castle place. I thought you were talking about the cemetary with the skeletons.

I like how I spent two hours Wednesday trying to kill the Taurus Demon, only to kill him the first try this morning. This was followed by getting rid of the dragon, and then killing the armored boar on the first try.

I'm feeling good right now. Even though I have less than half of my health and two estus flasks and I have no idea where the next bonfire is.

So  yeah, I just found the undead castle town place. I though you meant not to go up to there, so I went round the ruins right next to the starting bonfire and encountered the skeletons that do not die. I said fuck that, went down to the other ruins..Lodon? Killed the easy things there, found the blacksmith, walked the pier and got killed by the unhittable ghosts.

So then I finally decided, screw it, going up the stairs on the mountain. Feel good now that I know  where to go.

So, I never really made it that far into Demon's Souls, what should I be leveling? I just the Knight starting class...well, because I had to. Everything else was ugly.

Basically just level the things that you think you should be leveling. You should know what you want to buff as you play.

Like, I got the Drake's Sword, so I buffed strength to eighteen to wield it. Now I'm going to start buffing Dexterity and Vitality. That's just my play style, though. Others are going to buff the magic stats because that's how they play. It's all up to you and what you want to play.

Honestly, that's my favorite thing about these games. You play how you want to play, and you buff the stats that fit your play style. It's a great, honestly revolutionary, way to structure a game that's very centered on the individual and their idiosyncratic play styles.

That's good to hear.

I've talked with people about Demon's Souls before and how I was putting points into Strength and...Constitution? I dunno, whatever gave me more health, along with Dexterity, and they basically all called me an idiot for not leveling magic and told me I didn't know how to play the game properly. It's part of the reason why I stopped playing it, just because I got the feeling I had to do things a certain way in order to advance.

There seems to be a large contingent of Demon's Souls players that basically just say "this is what you have to level, this is the order you need to do the levels in, etc. etc. etc."

It's almost refreshing in Dark Souls, when you encounter the skeletons in the graveyard, or the unhittable ghosts, that it's just so overwhelmingly difficult that you can kind of figure "i'm probably not supposed to go this way?"

Yeeeah...there's no 'supposed to's in these games. You want to play as a big strong soldier type, buff strength, vitality and dexterity. You want to be a magician, buff the magical stats. It's very hard to screw up character building in this game.

I, for one, am incredibly disappointed with Dark Souls. I would have been less so had I not played Demon's Souls, but my expectations were high. It didn't take long for me to see blatant reuse of set pieces from Demon's Souls, and from what I hear of the later game, it doesn't end. The enemies are frustrating because they ALL seem to move faster than I can. Hell, the prisoner zombie things from the very first area seem to move MUCH faster than ANYTHING I've fought so far. And there's a section where I had to fight a mob of them in a four foot wide hallway. I don't understand WHY they put them there, there was a wide open area just outside that would have been perfect for a mob encounter.

Demon's Souls was challenging, but Dark Souls just feels cheap, like the hadoken spamming Ryu AI in Street Fighter 2.

And I mean that literally because every other hollow soldier has an unlimited supply of firebombs which they are more than happy to use at point blank range.

Moving on from negativity.

I just totally kicked the fuck out of the Gaping Dragon on the second try!
